Dec 20-27th. Ouch! That's gonna be one hell of a pricey flight with those dates.

Have fun. There are soooo many restaurants... enjoy! (I'll let everyone else give you advice as I've only been once [to NY itself I mean]).

Will be keeping an eye on this thread as we are going mid-Jan so also looking for any advice.

I know to visit Ground Zero, Empire State, Statue of Liberty and Central Park but any hidden gems please feel free to suggest.

Advice would be to make sure you take a hat and a good coat!

I have been to New York around the same time you are planning to go and the amount of people is phenomenal, but it is a great time to go.

New York is a fantastic experience, enjoy.

I think I got a decent deal on the flight, Mrs is wanting to do the shopping, ice skating, top of the rock. WOnder what else is out there....?

Was in NY in March for a long weekend. Some of the things we did: Helicopter tour, Cycle Rickshaw tour of Central Park, Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, American Museum of Natural History, Ground Zero memorial and lots of shopping/general sightseeing.

Also managed to catch a New York Rangers ice hockey game at Madison Square gardens which was amazing :)

Did want to catch a broadway show but everything was so expensive :O (although if you've got time you could always try the last minute Book of Mormon ticket lottery they run every day). Visited lots of restaurants including http://momofuku.com/ which was great.

Need to go back really as we had 4 nights/4 days and it wasn't enough!

How much do you roughly need for a trip to New York? the mrs was talking about going away next november for my b-day present, but have no idea what we ideally need to save up etc.

Sorry for thread hijack Qjumper

We went in march for a week. Highlights for us were:

9/11 memorial
Free walking and eating tour of Chinatown (you tip at the end)
Rockefeller tour (and views from the top, but the actual tour of the plaza and learning about the art and architecture was really interesting)
Central Park boating
USS intrepid - they have a shuttle, Concorde an loads of other interesting aircraft
Staten Island ferry - some awesome photo opportunities here

Biggest disappointments were Times Square and Natural history museum, which wasn't anywhere nea as good a London

Rockefeller is a must.
9/11 memorial wasn't busy when I went in February, that was quite a sight.
A boat tour or if you want a free boat ride get on the Staten island ferry, it goes past the statue of liberty and you get the great waterside view of Manhatten.
Time Square is very impressive, especially at night.
Wall Street.
Clinton Street Baking Company for breakfast, awesome waffles.
Chelsea Market, it is where they used to make Oreos. It is a decent market too.
Lombardi's Pizza in Little Italy.
Walk the length of Broadway.
The Pony bar is well worth it for a few drinks in the evening. A huge range of beers and great atmosphere.

Weather will be freezing and it gets windy towards the waterside.

I went for NYE this year. Mega busy time of year to go but it was a lot of fun. Are you there for NYE too?

I would recommend Top of the Rock over Empire State. It's all well and good going up the Empire State building but the view from the Rockefeller is much better. Primarily because the Empire State is in sight!

The skyline is worth seeing at day and night. We did Empire State at night, after queuing for about 4 hours. I would recommend getting there early/late. Rockefeller during the day.

I have paid about 3k for flights , B&B accomodation for 8 days, but his is over the festive period so you should be able to get cheaper.

Little Italy and China Town cross over! Mind you, that was in the summer, not sure what it will be like in the winter.

Strongly suggest heading down to 9th on 21st for some expensive drinkies and food. I ate at a really nice fish restaurant there. For me and a girl it was in the hundreds :(

I have to chuckle about going on the tour buses, and just how many times the workers mention that they should get a tip :-D
