Going to New York for Valentines this year for 4 nights. Always wanted to go and have so many things I want to see. However, I hear it is best to plan your days as there is so much to do and I want to make sure I utilise the time best.

Has anyone been before? If so, how much spending money would you recommend taking for 4 nights? I hear it is quite expensive, particularly eating out at some of the nicer restaurants. We are staying in the Hudson Hotel which is next door to Central park so hopefully cost for transport will not be too much for getting around?

There are a lot of things I would like to visit as well which is going to cost for getting in etc. The hotel includes breakfast so lunch and dinner monies will be required for each day. I can see shopping is high up on the list as well with all the department & discount stores etc.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I spent a week there last year. Went through about $1400 all in all, with a bit of shopping on the side.

Don't be tempted to get taxis everywhere as they're more expensive than they're made out to be. Use the underground tube instead.

Also for shopping, there is a massive shop downtown right across the street from where the Twin Towers used to be called Century 21. Get in there if you want bargains on clothes or aftershaves.

$1400 is pretty good really for a whole week, including shopping, food, transport and touristy things. its about £850-870 i think.

I would say about £1000 for 4 days if you don't go mad but still want to have fun

I came back a few weeks ago we had 2 restaurant meals, standard type Italian was about £85 for 2 , high end restaurant was £235

Thanks. What did you do roughly to spend around $1400?! :)

Well there were three of us: wife, son and me. We were there for my nephews wedding so we were out every night for a sit down meal. When you factor in meals, drinks, tips (they are big on tips over there, usually an extra 20-25%), entry fees to places, shopping, transport etc, it all mounts up.

Infact if I remember rightly I was using the credit card on the last few days because we actually ran out of money.

I am going 23rd Jan, it cant come quick enough!

I have a list of things to do to last us 8 nights, and every single minute of every day is booked doing something! Good luck getting everything in :D

Oh, and Ive found £100 per DAY seems to cover everything :)

One of my favorite parts of new york is the taxi into manhatten. When you see the island from a distance it does not seem much, but when the road dips before you go through the tunnel and manhatten is in your face its one of the best things ever.

I loved the tube while I was there, easiest form of transport imo. When I'm home, I get taxi's everywhere and spend a fortune just for the sake of it but New York was different. I could believe how much it only cost - $3 per trip ie. one side of the island to the other, amazing!

How are you roughly taking then, SexyBetty, if you do not mind me asking? :)

Not at all :) Going for 8 nights, taking £800.

We have prebooked a few things, like a helicopter tour, Sex and the City movie tour etc, so the £800 should stretch a bit further.

my money management skills are not the best :o

No, you just pee money, and wonder why some of us cant afford the things you can :p

Ditch the hotel breakfast for one day and go to Normas at the Parker Meridian.

BEST BREAKFAST EVER!

Yes it's a bit pricey but it's unforgettable! Also theres a fantastic little burger bar at the hotel too, again, best hamburger I've ever had!

No idea about the Breakfasts, but the burger bar (hidden behing a velvet curtain) is awesome. We went once and it was so good (and pretty good value) that we went again the next day!

A quick word of advice... if you are going for Valentines Day, dont propose on the day, its tacky :D

Wait until the day after, she wont expect it then :D
