Newb after some advice

It's also best IMHO to buy the mobo, CPU & RAM at one go from one supplier to avoid problems with being 'piggie in the middle' if there are any problems.

hi Guys, thought id revive an old thread rather than make a new one...

Some stuff happened and wasnt previously able to get the rig sorted, but now things have sorted themselves out im back on the PC building train :)

Still looking at the rig mentioned in my other post but wondering...would this be able to handle games like BF3 and Skyrim on their sexiest settings?

also if anything is outdated and has been replaced by better for about the same price, feel free to point it out :)

or a 7850 if you want to save £100. still a very good card for 1080p.

edit : oh yeah, the cpu cooler, which is a new product. around a 212 evo, small and light, and quiet. plus i always like thermalright coolers, they have good build quality, and good mounting mechanism.

true spirit 140 is like a cut down archon. very good too, but you shouldn't need anything like that.

mobo and psu specced on the assumption that you are not intending to sli, so if you are, just ignore my post lol
gtx 670 oc version, with all the bells and whistles of a custom heatsink
z9 case has everything and the kitchen sink included, so the price is as is, no need to add more fans/fan controllers/etc
ssd+hdd combo, cuz an ssd makes everything zippy, so u can store your os and games on there, and ur music/video files on the 500gb hdd.

thanks guys!!

Yes. A 7850 will probably do that. Maybe not consistently on full AA, which imo is a waste of GPU power anyway.

a 7850 is around a GTX 570. Overclocked, it can reach GTX 580.

A 670 overclocked is about similar to SLI 560ti 2GB / GTX590 in SLI-optimised games, to put things in perspective.

EDIT : 1GB 560ti SLI, 2GB will give a flatter curve and bit better performance.

Lol you guys really know how to confuse someone..ill need to try and wrap my head round all this when i get home. I do appreciate the input though.

In regards to "if i plan to sli" why would/wouldnt i? I figure 2 cards can cause a bottleneck but theres potential for more power. That about right?

sli = running 2 (or more, but usually 2) graphics cards together, usually someone would get 1 graphics card initally and add on the 2nd one when prices comes down/has enough money to afford the 2nd card. usually gives ~70-80% extra frames compared to 1 card alone (assuming no other bottlenecks)
but of course the mobo has to support sli and the powersupply has to provide sufficient power

I wouldn't bother with SLI tbh. Much simpler running single card.

Deside being OTT for the forseeable future, 2 cards = more heat, more power, more noise, more hassle. And some games don't support SLI well.

SLI makes sense if you start going triple display gaming. Then you will need the horsepower.

Simple really. GTX670 + SSD / GTX670 / HD7850 + SSD depending on what you can afford. Don't bother with SLI.

Im looking at spending may of a grand, i assume that acceptable for a decent rig but not a monster rig? :)

If i can get away with spending less by not going the route of SLi then i wont, i just want my usual games to look pretty. I was a PC games, shipped over to console for about 8-9 years and now looking to come back to the wonderful world.

A grand will get you a top performance rig. Not monster, like SLI 680 and 3770K, but 3570K + 670 + SSD. This will max anything on 1080p, and have a very smooth system (apps launch instantly, ect...).

If you want to spend less, then you can drop the SSD, and a 7850. This will give you great performance, for say £750. Look at benchmarks and see what's acceptable for you. If you have a grand to spend, a 670 and SSD are good investments in that regard.

You will need to spend a lot more than £1000 to get to the next level, which makes £1000 / £750 sweet-spots for gaming.

Top of the budget, with with good components. You can save about £100 if you must from that.

I like oliviers spec but it is overkill having read the games you want to play. As he said you can use the 7850 to save cash/rebalance the budget. Remember the 7850s do overclock well and you will be wanting to overclock that CPU too ;)

670 vs 7850

Just a though, im going to be buying these bits over the next 4 months, is there anything due to change drastically?

Ill be buying the gfx card and CPU this month...

well the gtx 660 should be arriving soonish...so the prices of 7850 may drop, but its approaching christmas, so prices may increase xD lol its hard to predict
