Newly built desktop very slow running Windows 7-Help!!!

I have just built my very first desktop and have installed Windows 7 Home Premium, booting from a USB, i have been using it for a few days and have found that it is very good for playing games and films at high res but when it comes to things such as emptying the recycling bin and moving a file to another folder it crashes for 30-60 seconds, any ideas on why it crashes on basic tasks but not more demanding tasks as i feel the set up is more than capable.

CPU: i5-3570K @ 3.40GHz
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 4Gb
Graphics: Asus Geforce 210
Power Supply: Corsair CX 500

Booting from a USB... HDD? SSD? ODD? Is the OS on an external or internal drive?

I installed the .iso from a usb on to the internal HDD

Go into the bios and check your SATA is in AHCI mode not IDE mode.

Other than that, get a HDD S.M.A.R.T checker (google it, freeware software), as it sounds like your harddrive could being dying.

Okey-dokey. Make and model of internal HDD and operating mode might be useful at this point. Have you installed all the necessary drivers?

It could be something to do with the speed step/ power saving thing with the CPU, that used to make mine feel a bit choppy but never crashed, maybe try disabling it for a day or two to see if it makes any difference?

The HDD is brand new and is a western Digital Caviar blue SATA III, it is running in AHCI

I'd suggest either your ram or hard drive are faulty.

Possibly SATA cable is faulty.

Download memtest ISO and burn that to disc (or USB) to test your ram

Indeed it has and it is about as usefull as a chocolate fire guard
I ran it once to test a system runs fine all is well

Try a proper memtest prog and it failed within 20 seconds

-What I do is put Parted Magic on a cd, memtest+ is part of the 'extra' tools in the boot menu.

I use IMGBurn to burn the ISO file onto a cd, then boot from it.

Okay so memtest found no problems with memory and 'speedfan' gave the hdd 94% for both fitness and performance, i also changed the sata cable, and no luck.

what would be the next potential problem?

Nothing big, even when i started to use it for the first time and had nothing installed it started to play up

PROBLEM FIXED
Me and my brother found that even though my version of windows was legit, i had used a debug version by mistake XD , i installed a different version (7 Pro N) and it runs like a dream Thanks for the help j6m, bledd, lurkio, kilohawk and addicted
