NEWS: Alan Johnston Released

VIRII said:
It is his opinion. Why in your opinion where the kidnappers allegedly (according to Alan Johnston) afraid once hamas took charge of security?

I don't know, maybe because Fatah were looking after them?

VIRII said:
Do you think that they were worried that they might be given big houses and nice cars or something?

If that made sense I would try and answer.

VIRII said:
If Hamas are such a lovely bunch of people then why the balaclavas and guns?

Maybe they are ugly.

You said "extreme violence and torture" - this is completley different to "threats of".

At least one member Dugmash clan was assasinated by hamas to encourage alan johnstones release. Like I said the other members hamas arrested and interrogated were probably made to tell of his location through physical coerrtion so I'd say that counts as extreme violence and torture.

EDIT not a bad thing what hamas did either. In fact i'd say it was very good. They got alan released and have also uped there image and credibility ten fold.

Torture perhaps but extreme violence?, not a chance.

I do love your use of "probably" - but it doesn't absolve you of the need to provide a source.

I heard it on the news about a week ago. Don't have a link but if you search you'll find the info somehwhere.

I think some people are missing the point of my post. I couldn't care less if hamas killed/tortured members of the amry of islam. In fact they'd probably be doing the world a great favour if they did. Hamas aren't bad for using violence to get alan released because the army of islam don't really seem like nice peace loving people open to new ideas and debate.

Incidently many people in the news are stating that the 'army of islam' were just a front for a notorious gaza crime family that were using jihad to make themselves appear more respectable.

Since last Saturday, the sources said, dozens of Hamas militiamen have been surrounding the area where the Dughmush clan lives in Gaza City's Sabra neighborhood. Hamas has warned that it will use force unless Johnston is freed by Monday.

"This man is a big thug," a source said. "He is claiming to head a group calling itself the Army of Islam. In fact, this is just a group of murderers and thugs who want money and jobs."

On Wednesday, a member of the clan, Munir Dughmush, was shot by unknown gunmen in Gaza City's Zeitoun neighborhood. His killing raised fears that the clan might try to kidnap another foreigner.

It says an unknown gunman but the news reported that it was carried out by Hamas.

Where the kidnappings not in the last couple of days or have I lost track of time?

People in power are seldom nice and peace loving - makes it harder to remain in power. That goes for governments in the East, West, North and South. (have you seen how violent Emperor Pengiuns are?)

Incidently many people in the news are stating that the 'army of islam' wree just a front for a notorious gaza crime family that were using jihad to make themselves appear more respectable.

Sounds very much like the PIRA.

Which goes no way to explaining why they are afraid of Hamas does it.......

hmmm is that why the veil is worn too? What about the guns though? Why do democratic peaceful people who no-one is afraid of or has reason to be afraid of need so many guns?

So once again, why do you think the kidnappers were afraid of Hamas?

Didn't they demand the realise of cleric that's being held in a UK prison?

Jokester
Have we ever released prisoners or given in to kidnappers demands? AFAIK we never have.

Making threats of violence seems to be a specialicity for most humans so nothing new in this case.

Most humans make threats of violence? I don't think so, not civilised people.

However what use is a threat if it is not believed? None at all. A threat only has power if it is believeable. So if Hamas were making threats and the kidnappers believed them then you have to wonder why? Why were they worried by threats of violence? Because they knew hamas would carry those threats out perhaps?
