Next best thing to a Spinpoint F1 320gb?

you looking to raid tosk? I'd go for the samsung f1's as they are likely to be the fastest 500gb's available and the quietest and yet also the cheapest, samsung arent doing an amazing job with these f1 series, far cheaper than all of its competition, yet faster and quieter too.

unfortunately harddrives dont get reviewed much unless its a new raptor or the new largest drive like the samsung 1tb so its hard to find out benchmarks and comparisons for similar drives.

thanks a lot rpstewart :)

think i will go with 2 of them

Why would Samsung put together a 500gb drive with two 3xx platters and go to the trouble of limiting them? I understand the higher density platters will prove faster, but then wouldn't they just market it at it's actual size?

marketting a 680gb is harder as its a strange size, if its 500gb then it will be the fastest 500gb available.

I'm sure if it was the larger platters in the 500gb, and subsequently the fastest one around, then they would surely make that a selling point, or at least be more than happy to divulge the information. The fact they are being cagey about the info sounds like it's the 250 platters and they are hoping to sell units on the strength of the 3xx platters in the same drive family. I would love to be wrong, because I would surely buy one.

I'm back to the drawing board.

Can anyone confirm if the WD3200AAKS OcUK have in stock is the 1x320gb or 2x160gb?

I can see myself just getting the 1Tb F1 to save the hassle... I have no idea how the hell I could make use of all that space, though.

Good idea. The 1tbs are awesome. I'm thinking about getting another one!

Weren't there some new Seagate drives out that gave the F1s a run for their money? I'm absolutely certain that i saw a quicker drive than the F1 some time ago.

I'm interested in the WD 320gb, but it seems to be a toss up if you get the newer single or older double platter. I guess it should be a case of phoning up and asking.

Ours should now be the newer version as we've had a fairly recent delivery. The Seagate's are definitely single platter as we've killed off the old code.

WD3200AAKS, are these generally really quiet ? - Been reading on a forum from the states that tthere are two versions, some noisy, some not...

Don't know what the stock for the UK is generally like ?

and are they definitely 1 platter ?

The Seagate I received last week is quite amazing benchmark wise. Running HD Tach's 32mb test, it averaged 105mbs and was hitting 140mbs at the beginning of the test. The burst speed was over 250mbs. This is in AHCI mode.

It's also very quiet.

what about the access time? i heard is very bad.

Thought i might dig this out for you as this link was posted for my benefit when i was trying to decide between getting a F1 or AAKS. I ended up getting the 1tb drive as the mb/£ ratio was unbeatable.

Thanks, Beh*

It's safe to assume the WD6400AAKS is 2x320GB, right? There wasn't a 640GB drive previously, as far as I'm aware.

I wish I hadn't got this larger platter size thing in my head, I doubt I will notice much difference in "real world" performance.
