well guys finally bit the bullet and binned the skt A :)

got me a new rig coming together. spec as follows

opty 146 pulling 3ghz on air,
asrock dual sata mobo
ati X800 256meg
2 gig matched ocuk value ram(sometimes runs 4 depending on apps)
maxtor 160gig ide hd (main)
ibm 40 gig ide hd(os's)

what would you guys reccomend as a next step up??? bear in mind i may want to dip my toes into the fps shooter malarky at some point although my maind thing is playing fm2006 :) :) :)

btw always run at sensible res 1280x768 kinda as a max

depends on your budget really.. Would seem a waste of money upgrade to the said specification if you already have sights on another ..

my money would go on a A64 X2 4400+ and build your system around that.

Couple of weak areas i would consider upgrading. Ram, to a decent 2gb low latency kit. Graphics, to the next generation. Harddisk, get a raptor as a boot and swapfile and games disk.

Otherwise its a fairly capable system, and it doesn't need anything upgrading, unless you have the money you want to spend on it.

I wouldn't consider an upgrade to dual core myself if its going to be mainly for games, and as that opty is such good value with that overclock it would be a shame to get rid of it.

Thats pushing your luck a bit isn't it? ;)

I mean this cpu cost a few hundred less than the one its now equil to, i wouldn't say its worth the cost of a water cooling setup for a small increase on top of that. Its one of the fastest single core cpu's around, plenty fast enough for games for a few years yet i should think.

For high res fps gaming, get a graphics card upgrade...
