Nexus 9 or Nvidia Shield

I bought my daughter the Shield for Xmas. Only used it for about 2 hours to test, but it seems a great little tablet. The only thing i don't like about is the on/off and volume buttons they seem a little soft to me. Other than that it's great for the money.

It's an option, it costs more but you get more for money, that's how things work.

No need to get your knickers in a twist.

I understand that, my point was the OP wasn't asking about top of the range £400 tablets, he was asking whether the Nexus 9 was worth the extra £50 over the Shield.

General responses to that seems to be no unless you actually want the bigger, better screen, and faster updates.

Obviously pointing out the other options is valid, and that other options will be available shortly. But the Pixel C isn't going to offer him anything more than the cheaper tablets, other than maybe a bit more future proofing and a slightly bigger screen. That isn't worth £250 more than the Shield provided the screen size is acceptable.

You assume to know a lot about what the OP wants and needs from a tablet as well their financial situation.

You might be right, you might be completely wrong.

Well I read what the OP said in the first post. He also mentions not really wanting to spend more than £200 ideally later in the thread.

Anyway, this seems to be turning into a needless argument, which isn't what i was wanting (maybe my fault for responding). I was just trying to point out from what the OP said, the Pixel C wouldn't offer anything extra really. And that spending almost 3 times more money seemed ridiculous.

Well, when you start telling people what they should and shouldn't post it generally ends up that way.

Well my first impressions of the Shield K1 are very positive!

It basically does what it says on the tin - a very smooth, almost vanilla Android experience!

Nvidia seem to have added the very bare bones in terms of overlay and so far it's living up to the hype!

It's perhaps a little heavier than I would like and the speakers, while being very crisp and clear, don't appear to be overly loud (well, while streaming from my Plex server anyway) - although I'm sure there are settings I can tinker with!

Will try the screen mirroring etc when I pick up the necessary cable!

You're twisting my comments a little I think, or your reading them wrong.... Maybe I just can't express what I want to say very well, English was never a strong subject of mine.

Anyway, I've too ordered the shield today, got to put it anyway for Christmas though. I didn't really want anything bigger than 8", and the performance is more than enough for my needs I think.

And Nvidia withdrew them and replaced every single one of them.
That's not true NVidia didn't replace ever single one of them. When buying a shield its well worth checking you haven't got one that can cause a fire. NVidia will replace it for free but the shield can still be a fire hazard and its worth double checking when you get one. More so when its from a smaller shop that wouldn't have got the recall notice or 2nd hand. I am sure the better shops like overclockers will have replaced the fire risk ones but not every shop is as good as overclockers. Saying that even from overclockers I would double check just in case one slipped though. Better to be safe then have a fire at home.

Your talking about the old version of the shield tablet from last year. The new version for this year as apparently been redesigned/fixed.

But other than the issue, they do seem to have been pretty good at getting the defective units replaced.

Any Shield you buy today of the current version will not be a fire risk one. Only the older version and only a subset of them.

They don't sell the affected models anymore, so why would it be a fire risk? unless your buying used or from a dodgy retailer where is the risk?

Cheers for the info all. As I said I have a Hudl2 atm which is ok just, I play a lot of clash of clans and few other things so a larger screen would be nice to stop those fat finger drops. Unfortunately £200 is the limit really.

So you both think there are no small shops around with old stock on display? Just because a shop has old stock it doesn't make them dodgy.

Yes actually, it kind of does imply they're a bit dodgy if their selling items that have been recalled.

Also, the poster is almost certainly referring to the newer Shield Tablet K1.

Are you saying nvidia are shipping the K1 with the same battery as the recalled older units? :D You really do talk a lot of crap sometimes.

I don't know where you've been for the last few years, but maybe you should go back there.

“Also, the poster is almost certainly referring to the newer Shield Tablet K1.”
The K1 is the one that has caused fires. When buying a K1 you should always double check which version you have.

“Are you saying nvidia are shipping the K1 with the same battery as the recalled older units? You really do talk a lot of crap sometimes.”
No I am not talking crap or suggesting the new unit have the same problem. You are talking crap by suggesting I am saying that. All I am doing is trying to be helpful. The first poster looks to be buying from a different shop from OcUK and when buying a K1 Shield tablet from other shops it’s always worth checking you don’t have one of the ones that have caused fires.

I am not sure how you think recall notices work but they don’t go out to all places and many places have old stock and worse some even ignore the recall message. The K1 has sold very badly and many places have 6+ month old stock on selves not selling. If the OP goes to a shop with old stock from say July or older he could very well pick up a fire hazard version.

I would rather give the OP useful information then pretend everything's ok and he have a fire at home. It will take him all of 10 seconds to check if the shield unit is safe or not. its better to do that then risk a fire and assume he has a good unit. No one with a K1 should assume they have a safe unit.

“I don't know where you've been for the last few years, but maybe you should go back there.”
What are you on about? That makes no sense.

Phew, "B01" battery in mine! :D

Does anyone have any experience of the official case/cover? I'm leaning towards the official one because it's essentially little more than a front "flap" rather than a full case - so I'm hoping it's not going to add to the bulk too much!

The recall affected the previous model with the stylus, NOT the shield tablet k1 which was only released recently.

You don't have a clue what your talking about.

What are you on about? That makes no sense.

I'll rephrase so you can understand, I haven't seen you around for a few years, which is a good thing.

Please crawl back under whatever rock you've been hiding under. :p
