***Nexus One Thread***

The main reason i wont be buying an N1 is the fact that you cant sync MS calendars on an exchange server, seems nuts in this day and age. For that reason alone im going with the Desire, which is a shame as the voice to text and double mics are a great feature.

There are multiple 3rd party android applications that support this feature. I agree though that a lack of native support is not good.

No UK release date as yet, a few places have them up for pre order at a HUGE mark up. You will honestly have no issue importing from the states, its easy :)

Vodafone have been promising it for Europe since release, but still no firm details :(

If you really want one now, but don't want to import [Why? ], look at the Desire, formally known as the the Bravo, its the same phone with HTCs Sense UI, also no for sale in the UK yet, but quite a few places have it for pre order for less than the Nexus

If you do choose the Desire you will loose some of the developers that are hacking the Nexus, massively improving its speed and feature set.

Surely though the XDA lot will do the same for the Desire as its a HTC phone, so there will be custom roms etc for the Desire eventually??

Kind of, but Sense UI is closed source and the best moder in the business IMO, cyanogen, has got a Nexus and probably won't swap to Desire - He by-passed the Hero for similar reasons

Stock android is so easy to mod, if OEMs add anything on top it becomes harder and harder :( For example I'm trying to cut modacos Desire alpha ROM down atm, but am struggling to remove HTC's twitter app and other apps that I don't want or need, without all of the Sense software throwing a hissy fit :( On stock [Nexus] 2.1, without Sense it was SO easy to remove amazon.mp3 store and other bits I didn't need :)

Is it worth selling my Milestone and getting one of these really like the look and the extra speed from the cpu/ram.

Not really. Mod the milestone, its cheaper, and when done properly will make it as fast as a non-modded, stock, Nexus :) Have a look at custom ROMs, custom kernels and the like. I saw a while back somebody had overclocked the droid to 800mhz I think. Might be worth looking into for a bit of a speed boost.

Want a non-warranty-voiding solution? Get a decent task manager such as taskill or advanced task killer free from the market, kill all the processes that you don't use to free up some RAM :)

You can't mod the Milestone, you can use custom roms but they have locked down the boot loader on the GSM model so no overclocking it at all, i emailed them about it as the Droid can be modded but they said as that was a collaboration with google its fully open but the Milestone is digitally locked in the kernel or something lol.

Gutting, didn't know that, don't really follow the milestone tbh. If you can find a ROM frees up more RAM try that before thinking about swapping :)

Its the custom roms i like had them on the Hero loved being able to try different things but i feel the cpu on the Milestone needs more grunt, the fact its the same on as in the Iphone 3gs but clocked down too 550mhz which seems daft.

Looking at the videos of it at 800mhz + really shows it to be fast and smooth and much more responsive imo, will have to decide i guess.

Can decide what i want do now just sold my Hero for £220.

Just ordered my Nexus One!

How long does it take to be delivered to the UK, considering I chose to have it engraved?

The engraving is 'H-A-L 9000' so if I sell it on hopefully I can find a Stanley Kubrick fan

Desire has a trackpad over a trackball on the Nexus - ask anyone who's ever owned a black berry why this is a good thing :)
Just to clarify, as I've used neither, do you mean the trackpad is better?

A good analogy is computer mice. Trackballs are the old-skool type that pick up fluff and rubbish and die after a while - About a year to 18 months seems to be the usual lifespan of these trackballs. The Nexus comes with a pouch to stop dirt getting in there in the first place.

Trackpads are optical, like the mice :) They don't get fluff in them, so don't break. Never used one tho, so I have no idea if they're any good.

Rarely use it on the Nexus tho, just for moving the cursor in text editing, that's about it, everything else can be done on screen :)

My only concern is that its an exactly identical part to those in most BBs [8900 and Bold etc] And a friends packed up after 8 months, and has been working on and off since :s His phone is a mess though, he's compacted 10 years of abuse into 12 months :p

Thanks, Desire it may well be then!

Get hold of an HTC Hero first if possible, check you like the OS - The Desire also runs the non-standard HTC "optimised" Sense UI skin. Personally, I love the widgets, and seven home screens is a nice touch, but that launcher, it makes me cry a little every time I use it :( . Also, because its a skin, it's and always-on drain of resources.

If Sense UI is for you then get the Desire, if not, get the Nexus :)
