NHS and emergency dental care

You can do permanent yourself with 2 ingredients from the dentist I think, but obviously if you don't properly clean the teeth out first you would likely be wishing you didnt
You can't exactly drill out the rot yourself at home can you.

Last time I saw my NHS dentist was in 2019, just prior to Covid. I've been calling them every six months or so to see WTH is going on and each time it's "emergencies only sorry". So imagine my surprise today when I called out of the blue and asked if they were doing check ups - "Yes, no problem, Sept 7th ok?" :D

I have just gone private myself and will just suck it up. NHS dentist is something silly like 9/10 are full and cannot register. I was kicked off my NHS as I cancelled too many appointments last minute. They were pretty terrible anyway but only dentist that was available at the time.

I had a filling redone by my private dentist and he did an unbelievable job compared to the NHS one that did it before. Didn't even have to ask for a white filling either.

Lucky for me I have had all expensive stuff done before 4x wisdom tooth removal etc.

A checkup costs me £40 once every six months and a hygiene £90 a pop. Compared to the price of some things now it is quite cheap really.

I honestly wish the government would allow us to sack off the dentistry side of it and give us rebates if we want to go private. Kind of like the vouchers you can get for private childcare.

Very easy to deduce they need a dentist, but we have no booking rights. All a GP can do is advise of an emergency dentist i.e. I worked with an electrician and here’s his number. If you go to a GP with a dental problem, sadly it’s a waste of both your time
Fair enough, didn't realise that... Seems like a really poor system though given it forces the patient to go round the houses if they do need to get dental work done and clog up already heaving A&Es...

Surely sometimes you must get a patient who comes in with one problem but you decide it's actually dental related (eg a fever due to a dental infection) - seems really strange that you wouldn't have away of referring them to an NHS dental service.

I eventually got registered but if you want a bridge its private work and expensive but if you need an oral surgeon to get teeth extracted first its NHS again... talk about complicated. And speaking of which I've just had two out and the lower they basically had to drill it out in chunks and the anaethethic has worn off and I wish I could get another jab because it hurts soooo much. If you leave it too long this is the result and I don't recommend it I don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight.

Been a Journey, GP refused the prescription, A&E told me they cant step in unless it looks real bad, they said if face bloats up past a certain point to come back and they will issue anti biotics. There is visible swelling now happening around mouth.

Most of the dentists given to me by 111, told me the 111 list is out of date and they no longer offer NHS services, and have been asking 111 to update the list but never happens, only one in the city still accepts, but they rarely answer the phone and when they do they insist it has to be referred,

So I have booked private this afternoon, the pain has been steadily progressing, so hopefully this progresses today, and I will just eat the cost.

I will let you guys know what happens with the complaint I made regarding the referrals loop.

Given what I have learnt this past few days it feels like dentist services inevitably are going full private at some point.

£45 consultation, £40 for standard emergency treatments (I assume for each one so if they do multiple it stacks) and £120 for advanced, I expect I am looking at probably about £200 total which isnt that bad, but my hesitation was a potential endless snowballing fee.

on a sunday !, isn't that $$$, assuming you are in UK.

Private dentist I used didn't seem able to combine a check-up with a filling .. you'll have to come back, more $$$;
should be able to have some video consultation to show him what is up, so he can appraise the work.

Seems their prices are same for Sunday as weekday for this dentist.

So xray shows some root's that were not extracted when the tooth was took out, but it also confirmed infection, I got the tablets and told him I will think about the root removal, he said it would be difficult which bumped the quote to £350 and with it been diffilcult it put me off a little, but I might go back next week to get it done, especially if for some reason the anti biotics dont work.

Well guys I got a reply with the 111 contact details alongside a disclaimer NHS England bears no responsibility for the service quality of 111.

I rang the local 111 head office, and they started trying to say they never do emergency appointment referrals, after I explained I was told they normally do that when the systems arent down and the emergency dentist said thats the normal procedure they backed off, but really they didnt seem bothered and just wanted me off the phone I think, I ended up with a "it will be passed on" but I think its just going in the bin, not sure what else could be done other than mentioning to my MP but seems a bit of a petty thing to pass on given whats going on at the moment.

It is a private health company which of course allows the NHS to wash their hands off it.

Going to their website they got some stuff about the service outage as well.
