Budget?
How many cigars are you after, one special cigar, or a box of cigars (5+)?
Does he smoke cigars already?
Where will he be smoking it?

Where will he be smoking it?

What does that matter? Are some cigars more offensive than others?

some history my dad used to smoke cigarellas and had to give up 20 years ago.
and he enjoys a hamlet now and then since. i just want a cigar that when he smokes it he will think thanks son. sorry if this is a bit vague.

hes got lupus. when it first affected him it was his lungs plurisy but since then its his kidneys. scary your body attacking you for no reason. so hes on loads of tablets that dont react well with alcohol so since hes lungs are good now a nice cigar would be nice for him. some thing wow. mum wont be happy but coming from favorite son she will forgive me

hes lived with it for years now. what do you suggest as a perfect cuban cigar only 1. around the £20 mark. maybe 2 as i like a smoke aswell.:)

Length/size of cigar mainly. If you're smoking while playing a round of golf then a 40 minute+ corona cigar is fine, but if you don't want to smoke for that long then a smaller cigar like a petit corona would be suffice.

dcd thanks for your reply hes late 60s pretty fubared from illness so no golf.
so what would you suggest for a nice tasting long lasting (stub it out re light it later) cigar.

I'll get this out the way, and sorry, I know you said £20. If you can stretch to £30, this cigar is beautiful. My all time favourite, though I've only ever smoked a couple (due to the price tag).

The Esplendido will take a while to smoke - about an 1:30hr or so (if you take your time). I'm not really one for saving cigars but by all means you could put it out and have it the next day.

In your price range:

Cohiba Siglo III, not a very overpowering taste but very enjoyable. Fairly large but not massive (6 inch).

I haven't personally tried this but it's next on my hit list. I've heard a lot of good stuff about this cigar from various people.

Some people will turn their noses up and scoff about this final recommendation but who cares! The Montecristo No. 4 is a totally fail safe cigar, impresses every time and fairly cheap. There are obviously better, but for someone who doesn't smoke all that much they're great. I'd never turn one down!

To be honest, I'm no incredible cigar aficionado - I know a bit about Cubans as I'm concentrating on working my way around that country first - I am aware though you can get some better priced or better value (depending on your own taste though, I guess) from places like Dominican Republic or Honduras etc. I'm not familiar with them very well though as like I said I'm trying to learn Cuba before I confuse myself. :P

You really ought to invest in a cigar cutter as well, don't rip off the end Clint Eastwood style. If you don't want to get a cutter (though they are only a few quid, and would make a nice wee present in itself), then get a really sharp knife and slice the end in one fluid movement.
Cigar aficionados will also say that you should never use a lighter to light, and a long wooden match is the only proper way to do it. Something to do with the gas tarnishing the cigar. I'm not sure about that though.

I brought a load of Cohiba's back from Cuba with me, they are great. Might have my last one today to celebrate my sons christening... That or take it on my stag do in a couple of weeks time!
