Night Driving

M6 Toll at 2am for top end ****wittery and anywhere inside of the A55 / A5 / A494 after 11pm is nigh on unbeatable.

Black unmarked 5 series this very night pulled over someone, which was good as I was doing 'some' miles per hour on the way home to shake off some ponce in a Golf GTD......think he's just arriving at the toll booth as I type smelling of oil.

I do it, especially around the coastline round here there are small roads, twisty but with the windows open you can hear the waves and also cruise!

I'm exactly the same, you can drive as you please at night ( usually past 2 am it's very quiet) and you aren't held up by other annoying drivers, you get to places far faster too, whereas you usually have to keep to 80mph now ( or much slower during busier hours, 60 mph is hard to reach during the day on some busy stretches) you just do 110-120mph ( on bits of motorway you know where the camera's are or aren't hehe) and only slow down if a car closes in from behind or you close on a car. If there's no car for at least 2 miles in front and behind you you can just drive as fast as you please and use the middle lane and feel like the motorway is yours while blasting highway star or highway to hell or driver's seat or other nice driving songs, awesome feeling.

I'd watch out old boy, seen many a person pulled over on the toll by an unmarked Black Focus ST2/3.

Ah, cheers. I was using it quite a bit in October between 1-3 am and it was virtually empty until the staging lanes.

Night driving is wonderful. Cruising down the M4 at 3 in the morning is fantastic: you can go for miles without seeing another soul. And it gets even better when you go onto the smaller roads.

Thats the problem with midnight running on motorways, you struggle to tell da' Police from the public when your charging through the night. An empty city is where its at for the thrill of night driving.

I remember a fantastic feature in Top Gear magazine before it went all what-car/beano, they took a Ford GT, Ferrari 360 CS & 996 GT3 RS to Paris to nail through the city at night, great photography as well.
There was another issue where they had a Ferrari 550 LM which they blasted through London(?) in the dead of the night. That car was meant to be completely & utterly & absolutely ridiculously race-car LOUD to the point where at the end of the article they apologised to anybody they more than likely woke up that night!

I love this. Something terribly soul shattering about driving an incredibly aggro, noisy car through a deserted city centre in the early hours.

I am heading to north Wales in Febuary for a week looking forward to a drive round the local A and B roads. I didn't book the cottage we are staying in and I was surprised to find it is very close to the Evo triangle. What are the chances of being caught speeding in this area ? (not that I will be of course)

Driving through towns ans cities in the early hours when the roads are empty with some chilled dubstep on the stereo... bliss!

Driving with the roof down in summer as the suns setting down a very narrow country road with no-one else around is the most amazing thing.

If I said "none" and you got pulled, you wouldn't be too happy. Just use a bit of common sense, don't overtake unmarked cars (my downfall) and enjoy the roads. In the last 10 years I've had 6 points within N. Wales and I spend quite a bit of time on and around the triangle. You should watch the bottom section (A5) on weekends especially. Very, very few fixed cameras about, I'd behave on the A55 as well. That said, N.Wales is superb for fast road driving and things get rapid on the Triangle very quickly.

If you want to go for a few nice drives, this is from a previous post of mine:

Another way down through North Wales is following the Conwy River. Pretty popular so it's busy on weekends and bank holidays. You'll pass through Snowdonia although not on the Llanberis Pass unless you loop around. Come off the A55 at J19 (I think, Black Cat) and follow the A470. Just after Glan Conwy, the road gets quick and plenty of places to pass. You'll have the river on your right and its a pleasant drive.

If hungry, turn right over Tal-Y-Cafn bridge and head to the Groes Inn. EVO mag and Drivers Republic use it when they come for a hoon.

Follow A470 through Llanwrst to Betws-Y-Coed. You can choose to take the Crimea Pass, stay on the A470 to Dolwyddelan (this section is fantastic) and then on to Blaenau (don't stop), carrying on past Trawsfynydd to the south. Alternatively, if you still want lunch and didn't stop at the Groes, stop at the Ty Gwyn just outside Betws (you'll see it at the bottom of the hill before you turn right into Betws). Best food in Betws by miles. Cross the bridge and fill up at the Shell station you see in EVO mag from time to time.

You are now on the A5, head out of Betws towards Capel and stop off at Swallow Falls if thats your thing. You know have two options. The longest but most scenic route is stay on the A5 and do the Nant Francon route in reverse of my first post. The great thing with doing it this way is that at the top of the A5 you can cut across Tregarth and come down the Llanberis Pass, so effectively you'll have done probably the two most scenic Snowdon roads. It is a big northern hook though so you may just prefer to turn left at Capel onto the A4086 and stay south on to the A498 (I think?) which will take you into Beddgelert from the east to grab a home made ice cream.

Unfortunately, you'll be missing out on the A4212, which I reckon is one of the best driving roads around and fast as buggery. If you decide to go the EVO Triangle and see what all the fuss is about, you can easily incorporate the A4212 but you will miss out the heart of Snowdonia.

If you want more details on just the triangle, shoot.

It might be worth a look here for the camera van sites:

http://www.arrivealive.org.uk/

Just navigate to the appropriate county...they used to play fair and list the exact times and dates of the cameras which was nice.
