Found myself a summer job, its not glamorous but it's money! I'll be working nights cleaning up the main hall at University College (Durham Castle) after wedding receptions and such. Not exactly skilled work (!) but it's unsocial hours so lots of money :) Has anyone worked nights before? I'm not sure if I'm after advice, hints or what really! Anyway, I'll be doing 3 or 4 a week probably, but since its *all* night work it hopefully wont cause too many sleeping pattern problems. (I can just be an owl for the summer, lol.)

So here's where you all tell me I'm crazy, and no money's worth that? :P

You're crazy and no money's worth that!

Seriously, I wouldn't do it... Would mess up my social life too much and summer's the best time of year to be socialisin'

I used to switch day and night shifts constantly; your body adjusts surprisingly easily.

You'll find that, until you adjust, you'll go through peaks and troughs with regards to alertness and energy.

Go for it if the money's good.

Depends what time you have to start. Nights can work well if you don't mind sleeping through the day :)

Some people can get used to night shifts without a problem. I'm not one of those people though, night shifts absolutely kill me even though I get to sleep for 4 hours of the 8 hour shift. I suppose if you're doing 5 nights in a row it would be easy to get used to but if its two days here and there it will be hard to adjust.

What he said.

Try to avoid using caffeine as a crutch.

If you want the money then im afraid you have to do crappy jobs like that. What's the point in having/doing a summer with no money? My advice will be to do it, the worst that will happen is you will sleep during the day, not go out much but you will have the money to spend later. :)

Normally I'd agree, but its a weird one. For starters, being a student messes up the summer stereotype, as lots of people head off home so most of the crowd's not around anyway. Second, I *really* need the money!

Why's that? I thought lots of caffeine would be the way forward tbh!

I'm trying to get a night shift job but i can't seem to find much around here. It would suit me better as someone always needs to be at the house here during the day.

No - it'll screw you up.

Lots of fresh fruit and water are great for nightshifts. Trust me.

Yeah. Caffiene will mess you up. It'll wear off after an hour and if you keep topping up your stomach will be in tatters and you'll feel like crap. Bananas and apples are supposed to be the best fruits for keeping you awake. Also, make sure you drink loads of water. Dehydration and tiredness together suck.

Everyone is different. Some people can adjust to nightshift easily, others can't at all. One of my older brothers does the nght shift for 12 weeks at a time then has a few weeks on normal shift before going back to nights. Even now after doing this for over a year he still can't adjust. Another of my older brothers just does the nightshift at the weekend and he doesn't find sleeping too bad if he's tired enough.

If you have people living at home then I feel for them so much. It's not nice having to keep quiet all day while someone else is sleeping. You basically can't live. I've been off on study leave since May and therefore at home having to stay quiet and keep the dog quiet while people sleep. Also being a musician this has completely mucked up my practicing routine and most days I have to walk to my sisters house just to practice which I don't think is fair.

How much money are you getting for these kind of hours?

Also how are they worked out over normal pay for the same job ? is it time and half or... ?

Do it if the money makes it worth it.

It will always be something to remember. Everyone should be made to do a really rubbish job once so that they don't whine so much when they actually have reasonable jobs.

Whenever I get fed up with my job I just remember that it was better than my fortnight of nightshifts sticking a stickers on buckets.

No. Buckets came out of the bucket maching in stacks of 7. Took the bucket and placed it ona machine that stich the sticker on the bucket.

So really the job was putting buckets on a sticker machine. I didn't actually get to stick the stickers on myself.
