D40 has been discontinued now. I can only imagine that the rainforest site still has it at £280 because there's not much else for under £300 other than the a200 and an Olympus I think.
THe D40 hasn't got a built-in focus. Am I correct in assuming that lenses with the focus mechanism that do work on the D40 are AF-S and those won't are just AF?
Do the latter still have the dot on the bottom left of the viewfinder to tell you when you are in focus (manually)?
What about exposure metering, is that affected by the lens type bought?
Just been reading on the Nikon 50mm 1.8D. I think that's just AF?
Some AF-I lenses autofocus too, and of course there are Sigma and Tamron ones which will too (HSM is the motor for Sigma for instance... not sure if Tamron have an acronym). Tokina do at least one lens too.
Everything will work though, so the camera will still be able to meter and expose and so on... and yes, you'll get the little dot.
The 50mm 1.8 lacks the motor unfortunately, yes. Shame, as it's the perfect partner for these little budget DSLRs. There is the better (though of course more expensive) 50mm 1.4 AF-S (careful, as there's also a 50mm 1.4 AF), but it's more than twice the price.
^^ THanks! That list has been added to my favourites for reference. I guess now comes paying the price for having gone for a lower end model - the 50mm 1.8G is even more expensive! Ah well, might look at the 50mm 1.8D AF anyway as it appears to be very good despite manual focus.
