I wonder if we will get an announcement for the D820 on the 25th July for the Nikon Anniversary, and if so is anyone waiting to buy one?

I've been waiting a while for the confirmed specs and really hope that Nikon get it right as the D810 was/is such an amazing camera so I'm likely to be pre-order asap.

No, I bailed out on Nikon and have moved into medium format as a replacement for my D810. In the end I just couldn't be bothered waiting for a product that I think will probably only be a minor incremental improvement. I have heard rumours that the dynamic range of the D820 might be a smidge less than the D810 which, as someone who likes doing landscapes, is a bit disappointing. We will soon see ..... I'm sure it will be quite a capable beast.

It's purely guess work the DR will be slightly less than the D810 as a trade off for High ISO etc. The DR on the D810 is amazing and I would not like to sacrifice it however it's it's not really noticable and they deliver on other things like Auto Focus etc then all good.

The rumour is that the D820 has had its sensor tweaked to cater more towards high ISO performance, at the expense of low ISO performance. Not good if you are a landscape or studio photographer looking at maximum IQ. I agree with you on the need for a better rear screen / live view ... I think that will be delivered if the D500 is anything to go by. Essentially, the D820 will be a full-frame version of the D500, just tailored for general photography rather than speed.

That's kind of what I'm expecting a FF D500, which considering how good the D500 is would be a good thing.

That doesn't make much sense, why hamper the main reason for buying that body?

Because it will be the slight trade off for high ISO performance on what is probably going to be a 42MP sensor. As long as the trade off is kept to a minimum ie most people wont notice then it's fine if it excels in other areas. I wouldn't be too happy if the trade off is big as the DR of the D810 is one of the reasons I think its such an amazing camera.

Hopefully we will find out within a couple of weeks but maybe that's wishful thinking.

Well not the full details I expected today but Nikon have confirmed it will be the D850 and I expect we will get the full specs during this week or certainly within a couple of weeks.

The video they released shows that it has 8K timelapse capability and the video was shot entirely on a D850 which indicates it will have amazing low light capabilities. Other than than thet they are keeping us guessing a bit longer.

“Nikon is pleased to announce the development of the next frontier in full-frame, high-resolution, high-speed digital SLR cameras with the upcoming release of the highly anticipated Nikon D850.

The D850 will be a formidable tool for those who will not compromise on exceptional image quality and versatility, including aspiring and professional photographers, and hobbyists who capture landscapes, commercial sports, fashion and weddings, as well as multimedia content creators.

The D850 follows on from the D810, which was highly praised for its extremely sharp and clear rendering, and rich tone characteristics. The D850 will be a powerful new full-frame FX-format digital SLR camera, engineered with a range of new technologies, features and performance enhancements that are a direct result of feedback from users over the years, who demand the very best from their camera equipment.

The D850 will exceed the expectations of the vast range of photographers who seek high resolution and high speed capabilities that only a Nikon of this calibre, complemented by NIKKOR lenses, can offer.”

This announcement was a bit of an anti-climax. Nikon developing a replacement for the D810 ? Hardly a surprise. The fact that they have gone with "850" rather than "820" makes me wonder if this camera is to be a replacement for both the D750 and D810. This video also confirms the suspicions that the new camera will be tweaked towards better low-light performance , most likely at the expense of low ISO capabilities.

And, @voidshatter ... you're wrong I'm afraid, my DMF has better dynamic range than the D810.

They often announce it as in development then shortly after do the full specs.. they did it with the D5. I would expect the official specs within a month but I was rather hoping to be pressing the preorder button yesterday :(

The bit that surprised me was them stating commercial sports, gives an indication that it will be getting a great auto focus and a bit of speed!

With reference the GFX 50S that is a Medium Format and it costs £6000 it's also not as good as the Phase One IQ3...

It might have focus peaking apparently.

Pictures have been leaked and that is the rumour. It looks like the built in flash has gone and they have made way for a Hybrid EVF/Optical!

If thats proves correct that is a great move by Nikon. I don't usually look forward to new cameras as such, especially when you consider what a mediocre upgrade canon did with the 5D4 but I have a feeling Nikon are going to nail it with this one.

Other things from the leaks:

Touch Screen
Tilt Screen
Illuminated Buttons

So far everything I wanted.... lets see what the specs are :)

Well the Nikon Rumours site says that it will be DSLR and not a hybrid. Although that would be a shame as the idea was good I wasn't expecting that in the first place so if it ticks the boxes I want then I'm still looking forward to getting one.

Looks like official announcement next week but specs have been leaked :

https://nikonrumors.com/2017/08/11/translation-of-the-leaked-nikon-d850-slides.aspx/

The specs look really good, 45.75M pixels and around 9 fps (with grip) is pretty impressive but all the other features and upgrades as well this will be a very good camera!

I'll be putting my pre-order in next week assuming you can immediately after the announcement.

Forgive me if I'm ill-informed, as I've only started looking into FX bodies recently.... But the 850 will only be a little slower than a D5, but with a much larger pixel count?

In a way yes, which is why Nikon said the D850 would cater for Sports and Wildlife photographers, and with the same focus system as the D5 the D850 looks like it ticks a lot of boxes for a really good option. There are differences though for example the buffer, the D5 can take a fair bit more but at 51 the D850 is still pretty impressive considering the size of files from a 45.75MP.

Well the press release was leaked yesterday and looks like it will be official tomorrow, with availability as early as 10th September in places - That would be great for me as I wanted it for some trips in October.

https://nikonrumors.com/2017/08/22/nikon-d850-press-release-leaked.aspx/

also if the Angry Photographer is correct it has BSI and Microlens technology, which would mean that there may not be a drop in Dynamic Range from the D810 that people expected and could actually improve on the D810s dynamic range.

Hopefully this will be available to pre-order today. The spec is what I wanted, even down to the video and it looks like Nikon have thrown everything at this one.

The price is pretty good to considering what Canon charged for their recent and pretty poor update of the 5D and it looks like the wait will be worth it :)

I like a D850 but what do I gain that I need from it?

Having use the 5DIV the past 6 months in various situations and weddings, it hasn't let me down.

Do I need 45mp? no…even Ross Harvey posted today's blog he will shoot in M-RAW (something that is new to Nikon apparently!) at 25mp.
Do I need 4k video? No.

I would however like:-

Tilt screen
True silent shooting
Faster card slots

Switching to Nikon I will lose

Built in wireless flash system,
Dual Pixel AF
The 85/1.2 and the awesome 35L mk2
GPS in photo (it's kinda nice!)
Good wifi control via app

It is better in the 5DIV in many ways such as FPS, pixel size, silent shooting, tilt screen, better card reader (albeit the 5DIV is faster than I thought, it is certainly faster than the MkIII), but deep down, I don't think the gap is that big?

It would be much cheaper to get a Sony A7Rii for landscape and use Canon glass than to switch entire system.

For what you do and have invested, it probably isn't worth jumping ship.... at this stage. However the D850 does beat the **** out the 5DIV :)

However, if Canon carry on the way they are with mediocre upgrades like the 5D IV and hold back features so not to tread on their other products, show no innovation but at the same time charge over the top prices for it then it's not going to be long before you have to question it. If I was a Canon shooter now I would have jumped to Sony probably so I could still use the lenses.

I think both Nikon and Canon have been stuck in their ways for a while but on this you can see that Nikon has thrown everything at it. Even the focus stacking which apparently was due to their engineers liking the super macro shots they'd seen and thought it would be cool to put in the camera, it's things like that we want to see and actually that is one thing I'm looking forward to trying out.

I had a good play with a D850 today and it's an incredibly good camera. I tried it with a few lenses (old and new models) and the results were fantastic. The autofocus was spot on and although I could only try it at 7fps that felt very quick coming from the D810. I did everything handheld and the detail was spot on.

Very impressed as I hoped I would be.

Got mine today :

Nikon have nailed it with this camera, it is amazing. Images are super sharp handheld even without VR so no need to worry about the high MP causing issues.

Can't wait for the weather to clear so I can give it a proper test!

I have way too many big costs coming up. If I sell my house at a good value then i'll buy a D850 sometime next year.

The biggest issues with the D850, is that my D800 is such aa great camera, years ahead of its time, it just doesn't feel dated. AF nails everything, it is fast enough for what I do as I don't spray and pray, Image quality still blows me away, I have no need for pointless things like flippy out screen or 4K.

I agree in a way that the D800 is a great camera, I had one then got a D810 which is an amazing camera.

I've only had the D850 for a day though and I'm already find all the little things so handy, like the touch tilt screen, I even tried the focus stacking tonight and that worked so well and so simple, no need for my focus rail anymore, following as a test with 2 inch models and a macro lens. Could probably have done smaller steps but just left to default and 15-20 shots (it will do up to 300).

Those look great Jase, thanks for sharing. What other features are you particularly impressed with?

It's hard to narrow it down at the moment. I was always going to get the D850 even before it was announced and was happy to do so before hearing reviews etc.

However I had some concerns: a friend had a Canon 5DSR and well honestly it was terrible, unless it was pinned to a tripod it was hard to get good sharp images, it was fussy with lenses and the DR was very poor. He just couldn't live with it and traded it for a 1DX (he also had a 5DIII). At the time Canon put everything down to the MP.

I loved the D810 so was worried that I'd take a hit in the DR, and I was also concerned about lenses and hand held shots with the high MP.

Fortunately, the D850 suffers none of those issues and has exceeded my expectations. The Dynamic Range from what I've tested is really good and hand held shots with every lens I've tried have shown no problems and are really sharp.

So with that said, the things the the features that I like so far are that I've tried :

1) Focus

It's very fast, shares the same system as the D5 which is probably the best out there.

Low Light auto focus at -4EV. Thats what the spec says but I tried it almost darkness and it managed to lock focus on stuff that I could hardly see, big improvement on the D810

Touch focus, not a feature I thought I'd use but now I've got it I can think of situations where it will come in handy

Focus peaking in live view, great feature and you can customise the colours

2) Back light buttons - yes I know we all should know where the buttons are but it's very handy as I do a lot of night photography

3) Focus Stacking - as above really handy

4) Speed - 7 FPS and FPS with the Grip. OK so it's not as good as say the D5 or 1DX as its not as fast and doesn't shoot as long due to buffer. However I tried it today and considering the file sizes it more than enough. I think if you are a sports photographer you'd need to try it to be sure but I think it will cope well in most situations, the focus for sure will be spot on.

5) Tilt Touch Screen - The screen is a big improvement over the D810, even if it wasn't tilt and touch you can instantly see the difference. I wont go into all the features of the touch screen but just to say it is very hand.

6) 45.7 MP! and why not! if it doesn't come with any sacrifices then more the merrier. I do mainly landscape, wildlife and now some studio/portraits so this is great. Looking at some of the test shots I've done the detail is incredible.

7) Video - I doubt it will win awards in this department but 4K uncropped is really good, I was out today and tried that and the 120fps slow motion at 1080 and was pretty impressed. Will come in handy for coupling with my drone footage.

8) Images straight out of camera are superb. It's probably subjective but I always thought the images straight of camera on my Fuji cameras were good compared to other cameras but the D850 beats it and for best out of camera images it's the best I've seen.

I'm sure there is more but I haven't tried the 8K Timelapse and things like that yet.

I think to sum it up it's just an excellent well-rounded camera so to pick certain features is hard as I look at it as the full package, this is a true upgrade and sets itself far ahead of any other DSLR in the bracket IMO.

And disproven:

I've had my D850 since day of release zero issues, amazing camera.

As I said way before release and even before specs were confirmed, I was going to buy one immediately and make my own mind up, if you listen to half of the idiots that report something wrong or those who believe it and post it on forums you'd never buy anything.

Every launch of tech will have a bad or faulty item, whether it be a camera, games console, PC Hardware., anything. now maybe he is unlucky or just talking BS who knows... however... reporting something like that will generate more attention which is what he wants and stands out from the rest of the people who are reporting how good it is or simply just using it for what it's for.

change of subject, did you get a Gimbal in the end?

Not yet, I'm away next week and will hopefully pick one up then.

It wasn't mentioned in my post regarding Gimbals however I added another to the list and that is the Moza Air Gimbal.

Brandon Li on Youtube (his videos are brilliant) recently did a review on Gimbals... a link to one of them below:
