Nikon's L glass equivalent?

I have phoned the local well known high street retailer who have the sigma in stock. asked to hide it so I could pop down and have a fiddle. if it ticks the right boxes then I can see myself getting it. hopefully it wont be too heavy.

Guess it's another example of why rushing out and buying a body as it's good, as against thinking about the long term game plan is not such a good idea.

it wasnt that i rushed out and bought the body. I sat thinking for ages on what system to invest in. i chose nikon becasue the 18-70mm lens is so nice and the 18-200VR is too (which is still growing on me). I just recieved my 18-70 for £159 and it is a great lens! They do some great kit but they are falling behind compared to canon at the moment, especially in the L glass area. Hopefully they have something up their sleeves, for their sake. quit releasing new cameras and get some lenses on the go is what I say!

Pah!

At least mine was cheap! :p

Yeah, I guess though that by the time I can afford some new glass Nikon would have released something a little more sensible in the equivalent 'L' sector of the market. If not, Sigma it may well be then!

Not really what you're looking for, but Nikon just announced two newcomeers.

the first is an 18-135 kit lens jobby link

The second is the rumoured replacement to the 70-300mm ED... Which is a 70-300mm ED, AF-S, VR, IF lens. Lots of tricks up its sleeve, but will it deliver the pics? Only time will tell, but interesting stuff.

and will it competitively priced for the joe public and not just for pro's. One major point nikon needs work on. (the rumoured 70-300)

whoops, forgot the link... Will be priced at £400 - whether or not that's good value all depends on how it performs.

There's also a hands on preview of the D80 at dpreview - it seems to have inherited more features from the D200 than most had expected, including parts (if not all) of the AF system & the viewfinder. Makes it an interesting alternative!

The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and 100-300 f4 are on my shopping list. Reading reviews throughout the day they seem to be very highly rated. All I need to do now is pop into town and test them out.

*Prepares himself to break the news to the missus!*

well well, 70-300 ED VR AF-S alphabet soup edition, the rumours i heard were right, 400 sheets? This could be something quite special, slow 300mm end excepted!

tropical grey actually (my 70-200 VR is one), it's quite distinctive too, i can't pick any out there though...

£399 is anexceedingly good price! Might have to stick it out a little longer! Oh the temptations to go out and buy now now now!

It's not bad and that a fact, if it's sharp and the AF isn't crippled like the 55-200 then it'll be very good indeed. It's a blatent consumer product and suits that market very well, the VR should compensate for the relatively slow aperture (though it's the same as the old 70-300 ED i believe.

Also I just checked and this isn't a DX lens, which surprises me a little, most users will be either d50 or d70/80 owners, i'm no expert on lens design but i thought DX format lens could be smaller than those capable of full frame. Still, it shows a commitment to film camera owners out there (if the VR works on consumer film SLRs that is...)

From what I have read, going DX on long lenses does not actually save you very much, so it may not be worth the trouble. I just wich they would put AF-S on the 80-400. I have cash waiting...

You and everyone else, the 80-400 was so close to being brilliant then they messed it all up by forgetting AF-S
