Hey guys,

Just been over to http://www.dslzoneuk.net/ to do my weekly speed test and I noticed that Nilly have slipped right down the ISP rankings list; They always used to be one of the top 5 ISP’s.
I use this list quite often too, to see what else is about and see how Nilly are fairing against them.

Lots of posters are complaining that Nildram are traffic-shaping and port-throttling – is this the case? I didn’t know anything about it if it is

I left Pipex because of this reason!

I know they are more or less one and the same company after the takeover, but I always thought that Nildram were slightly distancing themselves from their business connection by remaining more user-friendly to the heavier Internet user. That was my reason for joining.

But has all that gone out the window?

In comparison though, they do seem to be holding their own over at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/co...ldram=ON&tiscali=ON&zen=ON&cmp_action=Compare – I don’t know what to think now, so I thought I’d come to the place that knows best :p

If this is all true about the port-throttling and traffic-shaping, what do all you other Nildram users think, and where will you be heading next :D

Cheers,

SW.

Yup, recently traffic-shaping was introduced. It's all true and I'm leaving soon because of it. Had enough of this at MinusNet.

yep, its this traffic shaping that people hate bout ISPs. Thats why nildrams ranks gone.

Just mailed Nildram for my mac key, shame you cannot get it over the phone like I did with Pipex

Edit: Just rang their freephone number and got put through to a very nice lady who just give me my mac key over the phone, bye bye Pipex/Nildram :D :D :D

Still hanging on in there for now ;)

Does anyone know if they're are also having DNS issues atm, because I seem to be having problems viewing some websites...

Cheers,

SW.

Ps. Wheres everyone else heading too? Aquiss are looking quite tempting :)

Yeah I've had a few pages I can't view recently:(

Not leaving Nilly though, can't be doing with the hassle.

Its seems that I am connected to Pipex now instead of Nildram even though I am a Nildram customer, based on the trace route below:

Tracing route to www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.224.35]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms mygateway1.ar7 [192.168.1.1]
2 12 ms 13 ms 12 ms l1.ar20.gs1.dsl.pipex.net [195.112.5.29]
3 13 ms 11 ms 12 ms ge-1-0-1-0.cr02.gs1.dsl.pipex.net [84.12.224.29]

Same here

I'm holding fire switching from Nildram for the time being, at the moment I'm not noticing the throttling.

But do we know exactly what is being throttled by Nildram? i.e. which ports, at which time of day, and by how much?

There's loads of posts on various message boards saying they're doing it, but nothing (that I can find) saying exactly what "it" is?

 pipex took over nildram

Yes I know Pipex took over Nildram ages ago  . But up until a couple of weeks ago my connection was on Nildram and was not shaped. Now it is shaped and is going through Pipex.

So the big question now is, does Nildram actually exist as a provider or is it just a brand name for Pipex whos service is available for £14.99 and Nilly customers are paying £25.99 for just a name?

I haven't got a complete list, but they are limiting NNTP(newsgroups) and P2P. I'm not sure what else as I don't use them, but that's what most people are moaning about.

Traffic's been routed through the pipex network for nearly as long as they've been owned by pipex. The traffic shaping's only recent though (14th October ish)

There was DNS problems last night for about half an hour, I couldnt connect to anywhere, seems fine atm though.

Glad I'll be out of Nildrams grasp come Tuesday :D

Im with Nildram and I was hitting 200k a sec before on a torrent, although some are slow, but that may be caused by seeds. Is bittorent effected?

reading the various threads about isp's makes me want to leave Nildram heh. Really tempting indeed but ive never had a problem atall very good service, i've noticed my lack of dl speed , but fileplanet ushaully comes down at 600kpbs. Torrent . .. hardly worked for me anyway :P £25pm nothing cheaper out there apart from Sky

Just a thought: Nildram got BT to enable interleaving on my line a while ago when I was having a few sync problems (Router, not my line) I’ve since tried to call them and get it turned off, now that everything’s sorted with my Speedtouch, but after hanging on for ages and getting no response from any emails, I gave up

Would my new ISP (Probably Aquiss) be able to get it turned off again without complication, or should I try further with Nildram to get in touch and let them sort it while I’m still they’re customer :)

I want my old pings back :p

SW.

My line is interleaved too, I emailed Nildram about it a few times and got no reply at all. I just accept it now.
