Nintendo NX: Your hardware prediction / what you would like to see?

It might be too late for Nintendo to win back the core gamer. Not enough people care about Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc any more - at least not compared today's big hitters. They've squandered these ips tbh and, while I'll always have a soft spot for Nintendo, they haven't been on form for a long time and cater primarily for the casual party market. And also why bother spending millions producing games of the quality fans demand when people will lap up little plastic figures of characters that used to be in great games?! :/

Getting back on topic - a powerful handheld that could be quickly docked to your TV and had an equal focus on local and online multiplayer would be attractive to me. I want to be able to play Monster Hunter out and about, get in from work and play with my mates online on my TV, then pop round to their house and continue playing with them and other ppl online. Basically bring back couch gaming and extend it online on one piece of portable kit.

A Metroid game done well, by a team like Retro Studios would destroy the competition as it stands, and I'd buy it immediately. Then you've got a futuristic racer, of real quality, F-Zero, also a system seller if done right.

Nintendo have a chance to shake up the console market from its PC port relationship.

+1 My biggest draw to Nintendo and the fond memories I have playing Nintendo games in my childhood were playing them together with other-people, local multiplayer (AKA couch gaming). Granted the WiiU still does this fine, but I'm sad that fewer games now bother with local multiplayer. I don't think the NX will be a handheld, they need something for the home console space to succeed where the WiiU failed, but here's my thoughts on it anyway.

I'm not sure about playing MH out and about given how long the quests take. But I would like for MH to be on a more powerful system, I enjoyed MH3U on WiiU (I bought the console for that game). If they continue to stick with Nintendo, then I hope Nintendo's next portable system is more powerful (720p please) and doesn't rely on useless gimmicks like 3D that just add unnecessary cost to the hardware. The current 3DS is 400x240(x2) and games like MH look like they did almost a decade ago on PSP. The PSVita is ~576p, so the next system needs to be a bit better. And most importantly it needs to be comfortable to play on, playing Monster Hunter on 3DS hurts my hands, even on a 3DS XL, whether I use the CPP or not. Otherwise I hope that franchise appears on other systems. I'd be happy with a PS4 version of Monster Hunter.

True that. Metroid is one shooter that really stands out from the crowd with it's wonderful single-player exploration focused gameplay. As fun as the likes of Crysis is, it just doesn't feel me with the same sense of fear and loneliness that the Metroid Prime games did (until Samus got some company in the form of some sweet upgrades). Thing is Nintendo don't seem to want to make those games. Frustrating that, the WiiU could have really used a good Metroid game.

The exact shape of the NX hardware isn’t yet clear. People familiar with the development plans said Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use. They also said Nintendo would aim to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U’s capabilities didn’t match those of competitors.

Industry leading chips is too vague. It could mean anything, maybe 'industry leading' means PS4 level. is IMO they should have waited for the die-shrink chips, better grunt and at better cost. I hope to hell the NX graphics chip is smaller than 28nm. Both XB1/PS4 use AMD APUs and I remember the Wii used Radeon chips. The WiiU currently uses a 45nm process powerPC CPU and a 40nm process AMD GPU. Processing Power: PS4 is 1.84TFLOPs compared to WiiU's 0.352TFLOPs. By my standards, 'industry leading' means a chip process at most 28nm and with a performance of at least 2TFLOPs. What does all of this mean? Comparing it to PC graphics cards, the GTX950 is almost 1.57TFLOPs on a 28nm process. Boy do I love numbers, even if they mean nothing at all.

Whatever the case, this points to a 2017 release at the earliest, games take time to make and this suggests that Nintendo are at least trying to do the right thing with power. Question is, how will it compare to current gen systems? I'm glad they are doing a new handheld, the 3DS is holding back handheld games (sorry but I dislike the 3DS even though I own one and play it a lot). I'm more interested in the handheld thingy now, HD graphics on a portable system (Vita is 576p if I remember correctly)? Hell yeah!

Edit: PS4/XB1 use 28nm process
Edit #2: Oh and they need to market it well. Part of the WiiU's failure is bad marketing and the terrible choice of name. The horde of causal's who bought the Wii thought the WiiU was some kinda of accessory for the Wii. Scrap the 'Wii' name and go back to the good old names like the NES, N64 and Gamecube. Heck, just stick with NX instead of the codename. The Wii's codename 'Revolution' was a much better name than Wii.

I Just hope it builds upon the wii u , it gets slated but it's a fantastic console with the best and most consistently good 1st party titles in my eyes , for Nintendo it's all about the games , who cares about 3rd party apps most people have 2 consoles, or a smart tv or something else for other media

They'd be pretty stupid to go back to 'wii' style games. Be nice if they carry on with what they've done with the Wii U.

I'm very excited to see the details, as the same with any new console.

For me to buy, I would like to see Nintendo admit their previous failings, announce an aggressive landing strip of 1st party games supplemented by some big releases....

Standard controls, no motion

2017 is good enough for me! I'm excited.

Holiday 2016 could work pretty well unless we see a massive influx of massive First Party titles from Sony/Microsoft as Sony have early 2016 with Uncharted 4 and Microsoft this year have Halo 5 for the end of 2015. There could be a gap come fall 2016 for a new console and a Nintendo developed First Party title to do well.

If it's a 2017 release then it would be interesting to see their timing...March/April would make most sense but the way these companies work I'd imagine they would want it out and on shelves by the fiscal results in April 2017.

I also hope they continue with the way they have approached Wii U development in terms of the games they've released as personally I've had a fantastic time with my Wii U but definitely understand there is only potentially 2 or 3 titles I am going to play.

Hopefully E3 will see them take the stage to reveal all or similarly to Microsoft/Sony they hold an even early 2016 to show it all off (should a holiday 2016 release be possible). I think a Nintendo Direct would definitely be the wrong way to approach the consoles details when it comes to launching the first proper look.

I'm now totally on board with some Console/Handheld hybrid or at least two devices which can play the same title (say at different resolutions to compensate for power etc) which bring true cross play across devices and not just certain games that can handle this approach.

What did they do with the Wii U? This... a controller which was awkward to use and has very iffy battery life, but a secondary screen that was really not needed for most games.

A way underpowered console that finds itself difficult to compete with the PS3 and 360.

A Nintendo online service which is in the dark ages.

So why would you want another Wii U? The exclusive games yes, but not the hardware surely?

Like it or not, most people would love to own a single console, especially Nintendo as you would get Triple A Nintendo releases and Triple A 3rd party releases if they use a standard controller, and actually make their hardware powerful enough to not just compete but surpass current generation consoles as chips will be MUCH cheaper in 2017.

The wii u pro controller is available with all the games I've played, and for Nintendo it's not about the power , it's about the art style and gameplay experience , which is 1st class in every single 1st party title , no fps dips because there trying to push the gfx, and because there not trying to push the system to its limits the gameplay is top notch !

Mostly because I just don't care about how good the hardware is, or how it competes with PS or XBox. I'm currently not intrested in them (apart from a few PS exclusives, which I'll get when the PS4 is dirt cheap) like I did with the PS3. I have a PC for improved multiplayer and high resoloution gaming.

The art style and the gameplay draws me in to the Wii U, Mario Kart is by far one of the nicest looking games I've seen on console yet. All the games I've seen on the XBOX One look awful, juddery, tearing. Nintendo don't release games like this, they have set standards before they release games.

But as above, I have a PC so I can enjoy these games to the standard I want.

I'm far from a Nintendo fanboy, having not owned a Wii or gamecube. But the Wii U really brought back console gaming for me. But also the pro pad is a delight to use, yeah it's a pain having to buy an additional pad (it should've been bundled in to begin with). I also don't mind the huge pad and some games it does add an element to the design.

Lots of rumours it will be hybrid. Not happy about this. I just want them to release something around the power of PS4 or better so they can get third party support again. Would happily buy one if they do.

Enjoyed my Wii U, but a few more games would have been nice. Ideally more Nintendo games.

The Wii U is slightly more powerful than the PS3 and 360 yet third party dumped it like a hot rot before the Xbox One and PS4 came out.

They need to be in the lead with tech again like back in the 8 and 16bit days and not playing catch up with whats a few months ahead for them to drop behind.

There is no PS5 or new Xbox on the horizon and doubt there will be for 3 more years at least, probably 4-5. If they can beat or at least match PS4 and go with similar architecture, porting games will be easy so I don't see why third party would not support it in such instance.

That's if...and a BIG IF the console gets released next year. But if it comes out the back end of 2017 then it would be a Wii U situation again.

The Wii U got many ports but ports of games people already played. Look how long Watch Dogs took to come out on Wii U.

EA have skipped Fifa on the Wii U last year and this year. Not a problem for them to release it on the 360 and PS3. I think Nintendo have a lot more issues on their hands than ports by third parties.
