NIP for reg spacing

I think ANPR tech has been upgraded to flag the spacing.

Also to spot missing plates, I had 2x £100 fines for my 360 that didn't run a front plate, one fine on the journey away from home and the second on the way home. Did try and speak to them but the only alternative was court so I paid both and slapped a plate on. Knew it was coming and had intended to put a plate on whenever it got flagged but didn't expect twice in an afternoon I must admit. They even sent both in the same envelope

Yes, the tech has definitely advanced. My reasoning before was that some cars have a square plate with 2 rows, so maybe their systems didn't recognise spacing for that reason. They obviously do now :)

Twice in 1 day, that's harsh!

And people say the government isn't efficient :p

I personally think any plate that doesn't conform to the standards as set out by the DVLA deserves a fine and run by the 3 strike rule, 3rd time caught the car should be seized and crushed.

Every single person who has an illegal plate has purposefully done it, they know the plate is illegal but have thought what the hell I'll chance it anyway

Was that by an actual policeman? I'm struggling to work out how an ANPR could send an automatic fine for a missing reg, because it would have no way to identify whose car it was because of ... the missing reg.

I'm thinking £200 fine for someone whose driving a 360 is irritating but pretty meaningless though, right?

Like the people who park their expensive cars all along the yellow lines in Alderley Edge, because a parking fine is less inconvenient to them than a 1 minute walk.

My sister illegally spaced her plate (the one I don't get on with, because she's a moron)

She got caught, fined and received a letter from DVSA stating that if she continued to use the illegal plate and was caught again they would revoked the plate and she would have to pay to re-register on an appropriate plate for the vehicle's year.

It says on the NIP that to settle the matter I need to firstly complete a section of the form admitting I'm the driver and send it off, and secondly pay the fine. I can't find anything about them asking me to take remedial action. Looks like as long as they get their money they're not bothered and will most likely just throw the book at me if I do it again. Kerchinggg for them I guess.

I have the correctly spaced plates but they have other holes in them from a previous car, which I filled with black silicone because the holes happened to be exactly below the lettering. I'll stick these on straight away to avoid more fines and get a new set made up.

I don't why anyone cares, plate can be read as the fine came through quite happily. Its another £100 in the public purse and cheap for 15 years motoring.

Pay the fine and crack on for another 15 years.

It can't do that, you were caught via other means.

I can't believe how this stirs up such feelings amongst people (me included now because I'm responding when I'm already in a stinking mood!).

Personally, I couldn't give a flying f00k as long as it's eligable, you're not making the letters look like other letters with balcked screws, the letters are the correct height etc etc... the reg is EXACTLY THE SAME whether you space things out... it's absolute nonsense. If someone asked for your reg plate... you would say T L O C K... you wouldnt' add spaces in when describing hence why this is farsical. However the law is the law so yes you do get a fine, but it's one of those laws that's ****** and we all know it.

On a slight tangent, It's like the law previously around interference lights... so my bike would fail MOT as the brake light on the rear changed colour for indicators. However, they then changed that MOT rule, because AUDI and all other manufacturors made interference lights from the factory and it forced the MOT rules change rofl. Another one is, you can have NO spare tyre... and you pass, however if you have one, and it's flat you fail. WOW, yeah makes perfect sense that on the safety of a car.

Rules for rules it's appalling and we put up with this crap every day. Anyhow, rant over, had a bad day and needed to vent and this thread is perfect. Pay the fine buddy, you know you was pushing luck BUT you don't deserve the fine imho as it hurting NO ONE.

You're totally entitled to your opinion; however the simple fact is - plates are made to an exacting standard to enable/simplify/make more effective the ANPR systems. Spacing does help this. Just like the correct font and sizing helps it.

Also, incorrectly spaced plates are as bad as black wheels, right? :p:p:p

You have to specially ask for that illegal plate, there's zero innocence in it :p

Tru dat. There's been a specific effort to mislead.

By all means chance it if you're that vain, but take it on the chin with good grace like the OP when collared.

A line has to be drawn somewhere. It's wholly irrelevant whether it has a negative impact on peoples lives. Whilst the OP might have had a plate that conformed to other regulations and made it legible if anyone needed to note the plate down. It's turned into a slippery slope over the years and we now have tinted plates, 3D lettering, shadows, and whatever else the local chavs can come up with.

Why do you think you're above the law?

Good.
i think people that do this should have their plate confiscated. It’s an MOT fail which means your vehicle is not roadworthy and therefore your insurance will be void.

Mis spaced number plates are just chav.
Anyway, what makes you think your above the law?
