No Optical Drives - it's wrong!

Hi All,

I'm a forum noob, but thought I'd begin by expressing my annoyance at Apple removing the optical drives from their new machine. For me, this is forcing everyone to buy music, video and software through their own apple stores. What does everyone else think?

I think that Apple have a history of being the first of the big firms to ditch obsolete, unneeded technology in their computers, and also a history of being right in doing so.

I don't use them, hardly anyone uses them, and the USB one exists if you need one.

On balance, removing the optical makes sense. If you're worried about lock in just buy your stuff through the third party stores that have apps on most platforms (Netflix, Audible, the rainforest store etc) as much as you can. That's what I decided to do a couple of years ago and it gives you quite a bit more flexibility when it comes to switching about.

havent used my Optical drive on my MBP in months so i ditched it and placed a 500Gb drive there and a 256gb Crucial m4 in the main area still have one on my Mac mini and iMac but there never used

Nice first post, they actually started removing optical drives many months ago, in the Air, the Mini, the rMBP and now the iMac.

I've used the optical drive in my iMac about twice in 3 years, really not needed any more.

Going to be buying a rMBP very soon, lack of optical drive is not an issue for me.

Am I the only one that like's CD's? You actually get something for your money. What about the high street, CD, DVD's BluRay, stores that sell these will cease to exist. Guess I'm just stuck in that past. I know they sell external drives, but how long until they don't exist either. I tend to buy a CD and rip to itunes, just a personal thing really.

P.S "Stupid statement is stupid", seems like a stupid statement to me, also it's stupid

I've got an iMac that still has an optical drive - but to be honest, I can't remember the last time I used it properly... My iTunes library, before was all ripped from my CDs but since then I've always used the iTunes store, on my iPhone, or my iMac..

Everybody complained when floppy drives went.. I don't hear anybody moaning now!

With internet speeds getting ever faster, even large movie files can be downloaded quickly... /nopoopsherlock...

Sorry for stating the obvious - but I don't think I'll miss it... In Apple's thought process, must be the fact that it costs LOADSA money (in relative terms) compared to digital distribution...

'tis all good.

I only use my cd drive to make cds for my car. I don't think Apple are forcing anything... if i owned a business and the majority of my consumers hardly used a certain piece of hardware in my product i'd be happy to get rid for other benefits and let the minority winge.

Optical drives are slowly becoming this generations floppy drive - I've had my MacBook Pro since February 2011 - as you probably know, it has an optical drive - and I've probably used it twice since I got it :p And even then, I'd probably be able to get around it by download etc.

I think it was the right move to get rid of it - makes the laptop lighter and the battery last longer :)

I literally only use mine because you can't buy ALAC version of albums off iTunes and therefore I buy CDs and rip them to lossless for my library. The day you can buy an ALAC version will be the death knell for my use of optical drives.

I use optical media all the time and don't see that changing any time soon. There just isn't a viable replacement for making one-time, disposable discs. So if you're one of those people who need it, it's a problem.

It was a dig at your statement that I quoted in my previous post. There is NOTHING to stop you from buying content from somewhere other than the iTunes Store, and in fact is probably a better choice as there is less DRM.

I have to say, years ago, I bought a CD drive from OCUK, and the CD exploded in the drive. Was the work volume licence of MS Office too :-) They did replace it very quickly.

I have two iMacs, on the one I'm typing this on, the optical drive very rarely gets used. On the other one, it's used a lot as my daughter plays The Sims and it needs the disk to play the game. In fact, the drive is close to failing so I need to get the computer to an Apple store and get the drive replaced soon.

I wish those games came as downloads, it would be so much easier.

You can get it on the Macgamestore.com :D
