No option but to upgrade my ancient system

Hi folks!

So it's come to a time where my USB ports are dying, i'm getting some weird stuttering on PCI-E devices, firewire died long ago.. so it looks like my mobo is giving up the ghost. It's an old system, and I can't find anywhere to get a replacement (other than eBay, where they are few and far between, and could be as used as mine is).

I'm currently running:

Asus P5Q P45 Skt 775 Motherboard
Intel Q6600 (OC'd to 3.2Ghz)
4GB DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GT730 (bought recently as my 8800 GTS died)

I don't want to spend a lot (what's "a lot" ?!). My gaming only consists of TF2 or DOTA 2, nothing strenuous. I do basic photoshop tasks, some remuxing of video and playback of said video. More importantly.. I would like fully functioning USB/firewire/PCI-E connections :D

I'm keeping my eye on the members market for some second hand bundles but i'm still fairly blind to what's good, and will be good for another 5 years, and what's not. Suggestions appreciated! Thanks all.

anything from the last couple generations is good
min 8gb memory & a ssd
a 2nd hand 3570K would be pretty sweet but not sure if many ppl will be selling them cheap

I should mention, I do have an SSD as boot drive which has been great. I got lost on Intel's generations when they kept releasing iterations of i3/i5/i8 with different names attached. Am i right in thinking any of the 'i' chips past 2010 will be an improvement on a q6600? And that whatever iteration of intel chipset I get, will depend on what motherboard, as they are different SKTs through the generations?

yeh too many different chipsets since then for me to remember lol :)
your current cpu is a quad core, anything below a i5 will usually be a dual core... which is fine and maybe still faster than your aging chip except if you want something that will last you

the advice above of buying a new i3 isnt bad advice
but if you want to be playing games on it many years from now id take a older quad can overclock...if u can find any cheap that is :o

the integrated gfx on the new i3's might be better than ur current gfx which is something to look at, not looked at them benchmarks much

Are you sure your motherboard is the issue and it has nothing to do with age and repeated new usb devices downloading drivers?

I say this because an identical sounding issue had affected one of my old 775 systems, and only by accident did I find out it was not ageing hardware. As a fresh install of the OS sorted it all out.

It may be of no use, but maybe it will help?

If you are looking at upgrading, I too would suggest an i3 build with 8gb or memory.
