NO space - help!

I have been running my operating system (Windows 7) on my 40gb SSD for a while now.

When i purchased it i knew i would have to manage it tightly as space is at a premium. However, i did not bank on Windows updates raping all my free space, i have switched off systemrestore to save space that way but updates have left me with nothing to play with.

How can i get rid of these to free up my space? I actually cant even look at images as it says there is not enough space left!

I dont want to format, would re-installing windows help or would it just then re-apply all the missing updates?

i have ran all the free up space tools with windows i now of, i have unistalled everything i dont need.

thanks in advance

Reduce the page file size, Disable hibernation if you don't use it and redirect all of your user folders (Videos, Pictures etc) to a seperate drive if you haven't already.

I'm not at home now (work away) so will try all this when i get back

I have redirected everything to another drive, i've even started installing programmes onto other drive in an effort to save space

cheers for help

CCleaner has an option to remove 'hotfix' uninstallers. You are stuck never being able to remove an update then but it will free up space.

Is it really worth putting your OS on a 40GB drive?

Do you really want and need a fast boot up? Because if I only had a 40GB SSD, I would use it for few of my best games.

It isn't just boot-up... it's general OS operations. Putting the OS on the SSD makes things much snappier.. it's the best way to extract the potential from the SSD.

Not everybody plays games or cares about game loading times, anyway.

Yes, but he is saying that Windows updates are taking all the space up, so am taking that, he has nothing but Windows installed on it, I doubt there is much room for any extra software.

40GB is plenty big enough for windows and all of it updates. it shouldn't use more than 20-25GB at the very most. i'm using 24GB but 4GB of that is my pagefile plus over 1GB for office. i have hibernation & system restore disabled and all my games/documents/music/video etc on another drive.

ok, back from working away and i have done as asked, this has got me about 800mb back of free space, so not quite the impact i was expecting.

If you are saying it should only use 25g, what is wrong? I have installed a load of programmes on my other drive, i have redirected all pics, vids, etc to my other drive. There should be no clutter, yet it still takes up the entirety of my drive!

As stated, i want my OS on my SSD for snapiness of use really, i dont game much.

Any other advice to help me? Would a re-install of windows help (rather than a re-format)?

Wow.. I keep filling a 60GB one with just windows and a few programs lol

I have no idea how you manage with a 40!

There is a lot of other features you can turn off in windows if you don't use them such as media player / internet explorer and stuff. It probably doesn't save much but it all adds up.

if i got an updated version of windows 7 which had sp1 with it and did a re-install as opposed to a re-format would that shrink the amount of space being used do you think?

Have you actually read the thread?

Post a screenshot of the windirstat scan result.

40GB is tiny. 128GB M4 can be had for £90.

yeah, its my thread!

When i bought this SSD (it was nearly 2 years ago), i can assure you i could not get 128GB for that price. That is about what i paid for my 40GB if memory serves me right.

It may be cheap but is it any good?
