No speed limit?

I have been told by a friend that there is a few roads in Britain with no speed limits, but have chevrons in place to keep your distance.

I didn't believe this at first but remembered a road that me and my brother went down with chevrons, and i don't remember seeing any signs for speed whatsoever, there wasn't even a "National Speed Limit" sign in place.

Is this the truth? Anyone got any facts?

Thanks,

Andy

He's wrong - it's actually on the motorway sections with the blue poles and yellow cameras.

I hear they send you details of your times if you get through them quick enough.

Oh yeah, I apologise.. Forgot about those.

Chevrons are normally on the motorway. There's never speed limit signs on the motorway (except in areas where the speed limit is reduced) because the default speed is 70.

Yeah, you just pull up after the first camera and wait for half an hour, then tank it through at full pelt. :p

This was on an A road towards watford.

There are no unlimited roads in mainland britain.

AFAIK the highway code states that single lane unmarked carriageways with no streetlighting are NSL 60.

They put chevrons down on fast roads to try to stop people tailgating and causing accidents.

you dont need to pull over

the cameras are designed to work with 1 lane only so if i go through the first camera in the left lane, doing 80mph then change to the right lane and go through the second camera 10 seconds later, i cannot be fined, these cameras have a flaw because they were only tested in certain conditions have not not been proven to work with more than 1 lane involved

Hasnt that since been sorted out?

Another 'Arrufel sucks at the driving' thread.

5 stars.

Mean man :D

Of course it's not true. Chevrons are normally there to tell you how far to keep spaced from the car in front.

Even I knew that and I have only got a provisional :p
Yeah but you need to know these things because you're learning.

Once you pass your test you can forget about these so called rules.

I sort of laughed at this, then i remembered you actually have a driving licence.

I had a similar experience once, a ditzy girl I know who passed her test first time, and had been driving for months thought that the speed limit on the motorway was a "recommended" speed and that if conditions were right and you felt safe to do so you can do faster. Fair enough most people do go faster, but imagine telling a policeman "I thought it was recommended speed".

Well my ex-gf a few years ago was utterly convinced that the national speed limit on dual carriageways was 60 and had a go at me for "speeding". Not quite as bad, but how someone who lacks such basic knowledge of driving can be allowed to get a licence is beyond me (she had a license btw).

Logically considering current cars and current road surfaces, it should be a recommended limit of 70mph.

Think about it a bit harder and tell me its still logical to have a 'recommended' limit.

See I dont think this is true, fair enough you personally might feel safe doing that, and I know I feel safe to go faster.... however, there are many many drivers on our roads I wouldnt allow to go faster than 30mph if I was in charge.
