I truly understand you. Gor quite a long period of time, Noctua offered only 3 pin fans with their speed-step reduction adaptors. If I am not mistaken the legent NH-D14 is in bundle with 2 3pin fans.. Since then though with the new generation of coolers (from U12S and U14S onwards) I think they offer a PWM control model for pretty much all their fans.

The problem with the airflow per DBa test is that db is logarithmic isn't it? 40db isn't twice as loud as 20db...its a lot more than twice.

If I'm not mistaken, twice as loud is 3db more

oops I'm a bit rusty on the subject apparently:
+3db= twice as much power
+10db= twice perceived loudness

Not everything is airflow. Sometimes air pressure is as important or even more important than airflow, especially at low RPM/airflow where we all ideally want our fans to perform the best.
