Noise - how much does it matter to you?

Sound is very important, can't beat a nice sounding car. That's why I had Jenvey ITB's fitted to my Fez. :D BRRRAAAPPP!

Got a Milltek on the Clio 182, sounds fairly quiet most of the time. I really didn't want a loud exhaust to replace the (expensive) standard one. It does sound OK when you give it some beans.

Like a bit of sound from my engine, but needs to be respectable when you're driving normally, my exhaust has a bit of a drone at 2k rpm which is annoying but can be drowned out by turning music up loudly. Other than that its got a good throaty roar to it. Definitely like a bit of noise with 6 cylinders and more, although mikes vtec sounds pretty good with the lid off the airbox.

My Mini 1000 had a Peco exhaust, was VERY fast and sounded it! Come to think of it, brown with gold stripes, beige vinyl roof, glass sunroof and hub caps it had epicness written all over it!

Depends on the car I suppose, if I had an impreza I would be gutted if it sounded anything less than loud:D

Only thing is,back in the day my 325i e30 had a scorpion exhaust and it sounded fantastic, used to pop and bang, but it would grate after a while.

I find I usually want my car to be louder, and then when I make it that way I usually turn it back to standard before to long:rolleyes:

Noise is important to me, it's a big part of a cars character, it doesn't have to be loud as such, just sound nice and suitably 'mean' when really booted.

I love the low grumble of a V8.

My car is perhaps a bit 'too' quiet really, but then when just driving normally the fact that you can hardly hear the engine at all is very relaxing, when you put your foot on the throttle you get a low V8 warble from it, not like the American V8 thunder so much, much more refined and muted than that. When you do boot it, it does start to growl and then roar , in addition to this it actually starts to making a turbine like whine over about 4.4k rpm ...like it has a super-charger, ...thing is, it doesn't :p ...I like it though.

Best person to ask about how it sounds would be Invader GIR, since he's the only one who's been in my car for a spirited drive.

Quite important. My runaround 1.3 Yaris has an Apexi induction kit - silent when below 3000rpm and driving normally, sounds really nice when the vvti kicks in and you boot it at 3000rpm through to 7000rpm.

Its one of the reasons I own an Alfa. Nothing says "Good morning!" better than the aural delights of one of the all-time-great V6's :)

But I prefer induction over exhaust - majority of loud exhausts are just annoying.

Have to agree, my old 156 2.5 made a lovely noise (although as I said earlier, it was nothing to do with my decision to buy one). I don't understand people with huuuuge exhausts which make a racket even at idle, how do people not end up with a constant headache

Noise - be it from the exhaust or the engine, how much does it matter to you?

Personally, noise matters, a lot. To me a car has to sound good, booting it, or driving normally. But of course I know people who don't mind how it sounds during normal driving, so long as it sounds good under WOT.

So what do you think? Give examples if you want..

I answered this question in person at TGIs.

I do love my backfire popping :D

I like loud intake/exhausts if they sound good. Far too easy to just fit any old exhaust to a 1.1 Saxo which lacks any sort of tone and just sounds like a wet fart.

That's a nice original looking Fiesta XR2 around here which sounds nice on part throttle. When he boots it, it's absolutely horrific!

I used to have a pretty loud exhaust on my car. It was loud on idle/cruise and even louder on WOT, but had a nice tone to it... brilliant ripping sound while on boost! When I fitted the Mongoose earlier this year it cut the idle/cruise noise quite significantly, yet it sounds even better than the old exhaust on WOT!

The exhaust note makes me grin, so yeah, noise matters!

i do care.. not that i have a car yet.. i love Japanese in-line 6 engine sound but i'd also like something like this..

Hehe yea, I recall posting a link to that MG V8 months back, it does sound really, really good :D ...made me seriously consider the MG ZT260 myself.

Mine sounds similar to this, but more throaty/growly/aggressive due to the revised engine tweaks.

Not sure how to embed :(

The JWT popcharger intake gives me lots of growl on acceleration, but cruising gives me near silent cabin. No matter how much I love the Nismo exhaust, I doubt I could live with it on a day to day.

In my car, no noise is good noise. It is used only for a fortnightly commute from Ipswich to Brighton, and back.

On the bike, as loud as possible.

EDIT - @OP - why does much of that image look Photoshopped in?

i like engine noise, exhaust noise annoy's me unless its coming from a car that it actually suits

which in most cases it doesn't around here... example lardy lad cross from me has a ****ty escort with a pathetic 6" exhaust on it

god nose why people actually think its good

for exhausts......sti,wrx scoobys/evo's/super cars/some hot hatches ect then yes

best engine sound ive heard though as to come from my uncles V8 GT Mustang, makes me pitch my own tent
