Noise on a cold start only, lasts a split second

The noise does happen again, but like I mentioned above, leave it on 5 minutes,. turn off then on and the noise does not happen thereafter - only when the engine is completely cold.

Does fit with the belt theory then. It's fairly certainly not engine oil/oil pressure related.

I can't really hear in the video, but does it ever happen as you rev it? Could be the aux. belt skidding on a tight pulley. When the belt was checked did they have it off and check the bearings, or just check the tension? Does a bit of WD40 on the belt change the noise?

Since my first post the car has been off, I have been co the super market just now so it's been a good few hours but when I started the car it was perfectly fine so no noise - as I mentione dit only happens on cold starts in the morning so indeed I doubt it's oil/pressure or anything major but instead most likely a case of a belt/tensioner being rickity when left cold over night.

No noise when revving btw!

I would try WD40ing a belt or two but I don't really want to start spraying things that don't need spraying and in all honesty I might be thin armed but I'm not this thin:

My Puma makes that noise but all the time since it has been cold, it had a new cambelt and tensioner on October and im certain its the aux belt tensioner.

It only started since it has been cold, oil was changed in October too.

Re-assuring to know it's not isolated to just one engine!

Not sure what the noise is, but it sounds quite meaty for a 4 pot I must say.

Yeah it doesn't sound bad for a 2.0 il4 - especially how some people will try to have you believe :p

Can't be bothered reading the thread, but is your oil low? That could cause funny noises.

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry. All modern BMWs sound pretty lumpy when they're cold.

Oil seems to be OK, it was topped up by the dealer when they took a look in November using the spare topup cannister they gave at the last service with just a bit left in there so I put that in today even though that won't make much difference :p

Plus I'd have thought the oil low indicator (yellow) would have come on too or red if it were critically low?

Surely you checked the level first, right? What was the level at before you added more, and where did this take it to?

Not if its broken, which most are by the time they reach 6-7 years old.

The fluid levels were/are all fine but to be exact the oil level is in the top half of the the min/max marker on the dipstick and the remaining oil in the topup cannister was miniscule anyway so wouldn't have attributed to a noticeable level change (and it didn't, btw) but might as well just use it and make space in the wonderful zip pouch for a fresh topup cannister.

It doesn't really get dirty even in these conditions , I just wipe off dust layers every few months and give the plastic coverings a coat of Chemical Guys trim gel to keep it looking "black".

I edited the post as it was OT, but cheers.

I wasn't talking about dust though, my engine bay is literally splattered with salty grime..

Ah no problems, I don't get salty grime/spray in there really, there's some watermarks left on the covers from when I wash it and don't dry them but none from normal driving though - it's not really possible for much road spray to enter there anyway through the gaps in the bonnet as the kidney grille vents are sort of tunnelled onto the radiator so everything goes that way.
