Noise Pollution... I'm to blame!

i'd go nuts if neighbor was keeping me awake at 10pm... 9pm it should stop at very latest

some people are up at 5am for work..

Move into a detached property if you want to make noise without people hearing you.

My Brother In Law lives in detached property and he's been told off.

I'm dreading the day my neighbour dies because for 25 years we have had zero noise from him because he's never had a TV, radio or music system.
As soon as somebody else moves in I know there will be problems because we've had it so good.

Heyup guys. First off, i'm a really nice guy. I'm not some obnoxious **** who thinks he's above the world and can do what he wants.

But i like noise, and i LOVE loud noise.

Now for christmas i had a new AV amp and i've been spending the past few days getting new speakers and things for it. I'm doing the usual child menality thing of wanting to play with my new toys so i've been watching films and listening to music etc quite a lot for the past few days (OMG Star wars is awesome with proper surround sound :D).

My neighbours moved back yesterday though, and come 10pm tonight one of them is banging on the door wanting me to turn it down. Fair enough it was pretty loud, but he wants the music to be off after 10pm every night because its his final year of uni.

Now don't get me wrong, i don't want to be a total nob, but 10pm is a bit early isn't it?

I was sort of dumbfounded at the question and kind of went into autopilot mode and said yes to any and everything he said just to keep the peace (and so i could get the door closed as its freezing cold!).

Obviously i don't want to be the annoying guy next door who has his music silly loud until stupid times in the morning but truth be told, i usually have any music off by 11.00-12.00 anyway and then its just some mellow (read quiet) 360 playing until i go to bed. But 10.00pm for any audible noise from my speakers/sub is a bit drastic isn't it? Especially considering we're all students living in a student street?

What do you guys reckon i should do? Leave it till 10.00pm and then switch everything down to a whisper or what?

10pm is a completely normal and international standard time to be quite from.

Where I live in Switzerland you are not even allow to have a shower between 10PM-6.0AM

I live in an apartment block with mixed aged people around me.

Out of respect I don't make ANY noise after about 22-23 and before 8-9. I sold my surround sound speakers and bought a nice pair of headphones when I need noise.

I miss my detached house, but it's only fair to those around you.

Buy some headphones? i think your neighbour is being fair with the 10pm cut off. It is common beleif that you can only call the council to tell off noisy people after a certain time, this is not true, if the noise is intrusive they can be called at any time.

Don't you think its rather selfish to play your music so loud other people can hear it? in there own home

Yeah i know... i'm one of them!

Speakers aren't on spikes as I've read that the spikes actually transmit more sound into the surface that they are resting on over rubber feet.

10pm is a little early. I could understand if he had kids but at 8 hours sleep does he get up at 6am every morning?

In an ideal world he wouldn't hear the noise but he has also chosen to live in non detached house.

I don't feel wanting to watch a movie in the evening is exactly causing trouble and would try and compomise.

I can understand your pain because at my mates house he gets next door knocking on the door because people are "talking loud" at 10pm which I think is a joke.

I blame stupidly thin walls rather than the person making the noise. So both parties should compromise.

Get some decent speakers that don't need a sub, that's what I did because my old REL Storm used to tear the house down :D

Got me some Monitor Audio speakers and a Sherwood amp, and all is well. I can have them on ear-bleedingly loud, with lots of bass and it doesn't seem to travel far at all :)

Unfortunately bass travels furthest and can be heard readily in non-detached housing. Sound proofing will NOT fix this! It is only effective well above bass frequencies, sheer mass or a large air gap are the only things likely to impact, neither are offered in a flat/terrace :( . Placing the sub on something soft will have minimal effect too.

I will be building dipole subs for my new system eventually, excellent sound and virtually no transmission to other rooms (sound not audible from sides, top or bottom, only front and back of unit. No pressure created in room so no wall flexing)! Need to be pretty big to get good output though (4 x 15" is the plan )

That's todays plan. Should be going to a shop nearby that is selling KEF iq3's for just £169!

Eventually I'd like some nice floorstanders for the front but i may have to reconsider that for the time being. Especially as I'm signed onto this house as a tenant for another 18 months.

I guess my other option is to try and sweet talk my housemate into turning his spare room into a home theatre room.

We live at the end of some victorian terraced houses and it seems my room was a double edged sword in that its the biggest in the house, but has a wall right next to the neighbours house. His spare room is currently a pile of junk with all his belongings thrown about the floor. It is completely detached from other houses though, like a brick built conservatory almost.

No, 10pm is more than reasonable, and perhaps the guy does get up at 6 a.m., I know my wife's alarm clock goes off at 05:40 every morning and she's out of the house before 06:30 - welcome to the real world where people actually get up before midday.

Another factor is, just because some one goes to bed at 10, doesn't mean they're asleep at 10! From my experience, I can take an hour or so from going to bed to sleeping.

turning your music down at 10 is pefectly reasonable though if you are living in student area then anything goes really :p

The guy suffering noise has hosen to live in a semi, so this means he has to listen to someone else’s music in his own house all night?. Wanting to watch movies is silent, watching moves causes’ noise, FACT. Thin walls exacerbate the problem, but even with the thinnest walls imaginable, you don't get noise unless someone is making noise, FACT.
