How much track experience do you have Housey?

Not a lot really some track days, test days, got my ARDS and use to do some sprinting, hill climbing and testing in my yoof, but I'm not a track day nut, well not to the extent of some (see Tax Evader back in the day). I go a couple of three times per year when time allows but I am planning to do some racing in 2011, more news when I can share it, but I am spending now on my car finally.....though I am still seeking a Mk1 Eunos donor car!

Watching that M1 makes me want to go racing this very second. :( Wonder how awesome it would be to have a go in a proper race-spec weapon.

I saw the M1 Pro Car championship a couple of times, at Silverstone in 79 (I think) and at Donington I think in 1980 when the championship came there, which was a rare thing as they used to support the GP's mainly.

Ah yes, I remember you stating that you were going to go for an Mx-5 track car. Any reason why you discounted a Westfield/Radical or similar? Was it because you're actually aiming to enter a race series?

There's something about racing that is almost primitive, not quite sure how to explain it, I think that Aussie bloke summed it up pretty well in that film he released, Banner something was his name.

Why not have a go Sigma? You can go karting on the smallest of budgets, and even racing a single seater can be done realtively cheap.

I was lucky enough to watch my father racing an M1 in the 80s - they are fantastic cars

The Mazda Group C car always crops up on these threads and to that car I'd say this. I saw every in era Group C race in the UK and a few abroad and the Mazda always stood out. When you first heard it belting around it was epic and you thought the best sounding car ever but after time, ie a few laps it became a total pain in the ass an again was just a loud noise.

I agree with you about how loud it is - certainly loud enough to get tiresome quickly! It's a sound that has to be experienced to be believed though.
Oh an I also totally agree with you about all these silly 4 pots - they have no place on a thread alongside Matra V12, BRM V16s etc

I need to find a decent clip, but I feel that the DFV also deserves a mention in a thread like this. It's maybe not quite as sexy as some of the v12s, but it is still pretty incredible and completely represents the sound of the best era of F1

I have been karting a few times and did had a track slot around Combe at an action day as well as the VXR day at Thruxton last year but don't have the time at the moment. Can't really justify the expense of doing several track days at the moment but I'd like to do a couple next summer!

Have you tried a 2 stroke kart like a TKM or Easykart? They're a world apart from any kind of rental karts, yet cost very little to do 100s of laps of testing and feel far quicker than any road car on the track. Another option is something like www.club100.co.uk - they use slightly detuned TKMs, but with the benefit of being arrive and drive with excellent wheel to wheel racing (Again nothing like a normal rental kart series)
Track days are fun, but can work out expensive (especially if something goes wrong) and don't always offer great quality track time. You can actually run a single seater for similar sort of money yet it's in a different world in terms of performance.

Don't think it was mapped at that point, but the pops and bangs are pretty epic. :D

You a friend of Sean's or work at the garage?

He sold me his matched inlets, I was having them fitted on that day after his work had been done :)

I can remember them taking it up and down the road to test it out and it was popping and banging constantly :D

For some more 5 Cyl Love, here is one I really like, epic rolling wheelspin & sound just past 22 seconds!
