I installed my Seagate 250gb 7200.10 a couple of days ago and I'm surprised by how noisy it is.

It gives off a constant high pitch noise and when it's being accessed the 'crunch' is extremely loud.

I actually bought it to replace my noisy WD drive, but that was silent compared to this!

Could it be faulty? HDTach shows that it's performing as expected so I don't want to risk returning it only for ocuk to say there's nothing wrong with it :(

I had two barracuda's before i got some samsung spinpoints. They were/are loud drives. Not so much spinning but definately accessing! In contrast the spinpoints are near silent! Infact one doesn't even vibrate when powered up! Awesome!

If it's loud enough to bother you and you're not happy you still have a few days available to send it back no questions asked! :)

The distance selling act doesn't cover opened and used items :-(

I'm convinced there's something wrong with it because it really is noisy when being accessed.

Can anyone else with a 7200.10 share their thoughts?

i have a terrible loud drive mate and i just bought it from ocuk, very unhappy with it had it for near 2 weeks now and its putting my head away. cant stand the constant crunching noise, yet people keep replying in threads mines is that and the other...... but at the end of the day i still have a noisey one and im glad your in the same boat as me just so that i can say im not the only one that has received a really noisey drive

Take it out of the case and rest it on something soft (a towel or the likes) and then power on your pc. If the noise is still there then there isn't much you can do about it i'm afraid as there are some versions of the 7200.10 which are noisy, you can read up on that in some of the threads about this drive at http://forums.storagereview.net/index.php?showforum=2. If the noise is gone then it's the hard drive causing the case to resonate. This can be fixed in a number of ways. One way is to buy an internal enclosure which should help to reduce noise. Another is to use rubber gromets to absorb the vibrations and my favourite method is to suspend the hard drive in a free 5.25" drivebay using sewing elastic.

I have all three of my hard drives (one of which is a 320GB 7200.10) suspended in this way and i can't hear any of them unless i put my head inside the case.

Hope that helps.

I once had 2 Seagates 300giggers SATAs and noticed one had a different chipset to the other and it was considerable noisy.... worked fine but was 2-3x more noisy then the other seragate.

Think it was an Agere chipset on the back....

Hearing good things about the Samsungs though... even though they can die sometimes.

Sure. The pics are pretty much self explanatory.

My third drive is in the 3.5" drivebay. It was a tight fit and was much more difficult to thread the sewing elastic. I only did it because i ran out of empty 5.25" drivebays.

When i did mine, i used the below pic as a reference:

im not that creative , so i just bought a scythe hard disk silencer £7 - its not perfect by any means but it does make that seek noise less apparent. I can still hear the clicking when searching - but i just have too live with it!

Might be worth looking into, i was going to use the elastic method except i dont trust myself! I can understand why case manufacturers havnt designed something similar by now

Turns out the high pitch noise is coming from the motor on the drive and not caused by resonating on my case.

I put my old WD in and now I have peace again, what a waste of money!

Have a look at this thread below:

read post #146 and see if that helps. You may have one of the noisier motors described in that post in which case you can't do anything about it other than use a hard drive silencer/enclosure.

Yeah, just my luck.

Do you think OC would accept it as a return based on the fact that it's noisier than expected?
