Hi there, I saw this comment - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...00rpm-hdd-16-18tb-drive.18974711/post-3655568 and had me wondering about my recently acquired Exos Enterprise X20 20TB Drives (Seagate ST20000NM007D).

They are REALLY loud.

The idle noise isn't too bad, but the clacking from the heads is really loud, (can be heard from outside my office), and certainly much louder than my Barracuda Compute 10TB drivers which are silent in comparison.

These are 'enterprise' drives so I expect they are less geared for a consumer/home environment but the WD Reds I've owned in the past also subjectively have been much quieter.

One other point to mention I have 2 of these at the moment housed in a DS418 where they aren't recognised as supported drives by synology, wonder if that could contribute also?

Appreciate any thoughts or others' experiences with these particular series of drives.

Here's a quick (extreme, I'm running the synology benchmark) example

I have the 20TB model, I can hear it spin up but most of the time it's quiet. But it can sound like yours at times when its doing a virus scan.

I actually need to buy an 2nd one.

Thats pretty loud!

I need to buy some big drives soon, but they are all reported to be noisy, so i dont know what to buy. There are no 5400rpm drives above 8tb or something, which doesnt help im sure. I'd choose quiet over speed, as would many others im sure. Bit of a niche product these days a guess

I have noticed they've 'quietened down' over the past week as they've been in use, but still sound more like the 20mb hdds of the 80s than a modern drive.

Learning to live with it, but from what I've read helium filled 'enterprise' drives are just noisy, price you pay for the longevity. Probably another thing to mention as an aside is these drives aren't yet 'supported' by synology on any of their chassis' yet. They work obviously, but you don't get the extra seagate options you would using barracudas.

Bigger the drives, the more platters they have causing the noise. As these big drives are mainly design for cold or warm storage. The noise is something manufactures don't think about as they expect you have the HDD locked in a server somewhere.

Are you still able to use them in your DS418 despite not being supported? I'm trying to hold off buying an 8 bay NAS on the off chance Synology release an 1823+, but my current NAS is a DS416play and Seagate were the likely choice.

Definitely have some concerns about noise as they'll be in a rack above the spare room.

Yeah they are perfectly fine, the only thing I've noticed is that my older ironwolfs (supported) had a 'seagate' tab in the disk manager which allowed some additional seagate specific configuation which isn't available for these x20s. Performance and raid modes work to spec.

is that definitely the HDD making that noise and not reverberations on the case? it doesnt sound like an HDD to me.
If its the HDD then i think it should be RMAed
I purchased two x20s recently and both are normal sounding (inaudible in my case).
However one of drives exhibited a very cloud click every 1 minute (heads parking?).
I moved the HDD from a sata power cable with 4 other 8tb hdds and gave its is own dedicated power cable and the noise went away.
Its not an exhaustive test but i put it down to not enough power. Maybe such a large drive with numerous platters uses more juice than normal?

I also have the 20TB model, It is loud compared to other storage devices I have had, but the advantage of 20TB outways any noise concerns for me.
