Nokia N900

Apparently (according to some guy on a forum) O2 are going to have the phone in a couple of weeks time. Which is good for me, as I am on O2 currently.

Anyone know what O2 are offering for the N900 on contract? I'm due an upgrade on December and wouldn't mind an N900 but I was going to switch networks due to O2's lackluster 3G/HSDPA coverage!

OS2008 is for the previous generation of devices..

For the n900 you need the maemo 5 section which is not that populated at the mo
http://maemo.org/downloads/Maemo5/

There are shed loads of apps in maemo-extra and maemo-testing that are currently going through the QA procedure to ensure that they are optimised for the n900. With it being debian based, there are also all the debian based apps as well, but how they would look on the n900 is another matter...

i really like the look of it, but the lack of apps isn't really appealing. Its all well and good saying that people will probably make apps for it as its based of Linux and therefore porting should be theoretically easy, however, aren't app developers more likely to focus on the iPhone given its massive existing userbase?

I'd be very disappointed to buy this phone, as nice as it is, only for 6 months down the line to be irritated at the speed of app releases.

It depend by what you mean by apps - I too have the same concerns as you as it is sparse though getting better.
Some of the confusion I have stems fron the difference between Ovi Store and the Maemo repositries. There may not be much @ Ovi, but there is a lot of stuff in the maemo repositries and even more in testing. Also, the web browser is key, there seems to be a feeling over at the maemo forums, that it is a waste of time developing the countless web based widgets as using the browser is so good, that no-one needs a widget or will use them, they will just go straight to the browser..

time will tell on this one...

To be honest if the phone is up to scratch there shouldnt really be many needed apps. I've not had a smartphone yet so haven't added apps etc but it looks fine to use out of the box for my tasks, calling and web and a bit of texting :)

Now if they would get on with releasing it on something and quick!

Ordered on Voda, 18m contract, 600 mins, unlimited web & text. Suits me fine, same as I am using now, and I should be able to buy out the remainder of my contract with Voda already (4.5 months) with the sale of my E71 - bonus. REALLY excited now, I am such a child!!!!

MPD are 'supposedly' starting to ship Mon afternoon. I rang them after I recieved this mail

Hi

We have 500 or so pre orders and will be receiving around 1000 units from Nokia. The orders will be dispatched as soon as we get them; we can’t say the exact date due to the physical logistics of dispatching more than 500 pre orders, however we aim to complete the orders with 1-2 days.

Might be time to request my PAC code from O2 then and change to Voda, anyone using Voda have any problems with them?

Will probably go for the same deal as Kitchster - 18 months, minutes, unlimited web and text - seems good :)

On a side note I went into "Phones 4 U" earlier and played dumb asking for a release date, they said release would be in January and then phone was riddled with bugs etc - load of crap from sales people, make anything up, and this was the manager!

why would you buy something like this if all you wanted to do was talk and text?

Exactly what I I was thinking, it's being marketed as a mobile computer based on a desktop OS, the whole point of it is to install apps and use it for everything above and beyond being a regular phone.

I had pretty much the same from one of the guys at phones4u, i was looking at the hero and asking about the n900. One of blokes said it would be poo, same old nokia interface, same os as n97 (symbian lol), did say they will have it probably in the next couple of weeks though. I still cant decide what to get this, a hero, droid, sony X10 depends on release dates though.
