Nokia N900

I had pretty much the same from one of the guys at phones4u, i was looking at the hero and asking about the n900. One of blokes said it would be poo, same old nokia interface, same os as n97 (symbian lol), did say they will have it probably in the next couple of weeks though. I still cant decide what to get this, a hero, droid, sony X10 depends on release dates though.

Symbian? Last time i looked it was running Debian Linux mini OS.

why would you buy something like this if all you wanted to do was talk and text?

Well I'm due an upgrade or change of contract and the phone is going to be free anyhow, so getting an expensive one is good for resale etc if I ever want to - thats one reason.

Secondly I like the looks of the thing, subtle but great looking.

Thirdly I've never had a smart phone so don't know all the apps etc - but I guess I'd like to set it up nicely with my work and personal email etc, alongside the web and stuff. There are probably apps I'll see and download, but I'm not going to be a power app user like most of the people here.

I think its one of those things that until you use a smartphone and realise the possibilities then maybe you don't appreciate how much they can do nowadays!

That Voda deal sounds good, was that through a Voda shop/site or a third party? Unless 3 pull they're finger out looks like i moving to Vodaphone.

Have read a review that states in above normal useage the battery lasts 7 hours  Normal usage is 13-14 hours not sure if this correct or not but seems to be an issue for me if true.

Is that with the 3G connection set to "Always On" or "Connect When Needed"?
I find that Nokia ship with the 3g set to Always On and that really drains the battery.
Flip it to Connect When Needed and the battery life will go up a few hours.

Battery is my main concern also, hopefully the people who have pre-ordered will let us know the battery life pretty quickly, think I will wait for about a week after release to get some RL reviews etc.

Care to link the review? If it's not too much trouble for you to quote a source for a crazy statement, that is.

Ill have a go
http://nokiaexperts.com/initial-battery-tests-preproduction-nokia-n900/
I want to start this post by making sure you all understand that the Nokia N900 I am testing is a pre-production model and now that we have word the N900 is delayed as Nokia refines the software many things that I am having issues with may be resolved and not even present on shipping N900 devices. I imagine that one are where many optimizations will occur is in battery life and efficient resource management. Given this disclaimer, here are some initial battery life figures to consider.

I have not yet run a test of video or music playing constantly and will try to do so over the next week. I conducted this first battery test with real life usage, which is how I use my device. I had the following up and running when I started with a full charged battery:

* Maaku with two Twitter accounts being updated every 5 minutes
* Push email with Mail for Exchange
* IMAP email with 2 accounts updating every 15 minutes
* 45 minutes of active web surfing, Mauku usage, and general device navigation (on the train)
* Active and updating home screen widgets (AP News, Facebook, Mauku)
* Connected via T-Mobile 3G and EDGE with WiFi and Bluetooth turned off

At 4 and a half hours I received the battery low warning. The battery ran out after for 4 hours, 45 minutes and the device shut down. After realizing Maaku was updating every 5 minutes, I went in and changed this to 30 minutes for automatic updating (you can always manually update). I will conduct more tests, but wanted to give you a feel for how things are going so far.

Battery Life

The Nokia N900 packs a removable 1320 mAh battery. I haven’t done real objective tests, but I found my average usage on the Nokia N900 lasting me the whole day. An example of heavier usage consisting of snapping several geotagged photos, shooting a couple of short videos, uploading, navigating with Ovi maps, checking email and tweeting lasted me about 7 hours.

and from a user
Hi all,

after some days using the N900 (with already lot of charge/discharge
cicles) I'd like to compare my battery duration with other people.

At least for me, battery doesn't last so much... for example one day I
charged it at 10:30 and it lasted only until 18:30 without using GPS,
fotocamera, wifi, bluetooth, ecc.... just 20 minutes connected in
UMTS/HSDPA and the rest of the time keeping it in my pocket.

I don't have any particular application installed... I only use one
virtual desktop and the widget are: calendar, facebook, forecast.
Nothing more.

Another day the battery only lasted 6 hours... browsing a little more
(30 minutes in total).

Anyone else is experiencing the same problem?

p.s: today I'm not going to use it to connect to internet, just using
it as media player (I'm in the university library) listening it with
my headset. I'm playing mp3 songs since 1 hour and the battery is
still displayed as full. Not bad.

Not exactly what i said im sorry, but its quite close, but these are all pre production phones and firmware. Im hoping when some of you get your n900 you can clear up the battery life, i guess how you have the apps setup and phone settings will make a great difference. It does seem a bit hit and miss from people, but as we all know some blogs/forums are not always correct and can be mis leading.

Doubt orange will get it for a while, Voda seem to get the top Nokia stuff first amd orange don't seem bothered, possibly got deals elsewhere.

Looking on MPD, they are still awaiting stock according to my order, suppose it's a little early to expect them to be processing but I want my new man-toy dammit!

No, not yet, I resent it again about half hour ago and will ring them tomorrow, not that I expect any useful info out of them, but any info would be nice...

Found a link when I was at work on one of the maemo forums basically saying they won't be arriving with pre-order people until Friday....not liking that.
