Nokia to use Windows OS

I've never seen such a dramatic Company Suicide bid as this before :p

The lack of basic WP7 features compared to S60 is staggering... and S60 is horrible to use and slow as hell.. but at least it can multitask..

For the vast majority of people, WP7 does more than enough. Much like the iPhone.

I still use my N82 when I go on holiday, if only they had kept up with that build quality / design. I sorta try to pretend none of the touchscreens they have made existed in the hope they bounce back :)

I had a N80 for years, stick got it.

Shocking build quality, but the software just works, not fancy, not flash but requires no configuration or faffing about like i've had to do on my android phone.

Yes, the share price went up 27% on the rumours and now down 25% after the deal was signed. Net result: not much change in Nokia's share price. :p

Well the prices rose on the rumours due to speculators buying. But the fact that they fell again after the announcement doesn't mean that "oh, it was just a speculation bubble, now the share price is back to normal", it means that the speculators didn't make any money from offloading Nokia stock and in fact many of them sell at a loss because the announcement was widely viewed as a horrible idea by investors.

Don't just read the info sheet on WP7 - use it then see what you think! It does have multitasking for all native apps, then all 3rd party apps can be resumed using the back button.

Full multitasking, a task manager app and a task switching function have all been announced for update this year.

You shouldn't need an app to do something as simple multi tasking.

Don't get wrong i like the look of wp7 but the latest smartphone oses really pee me off. It seems you need an app to do many things that are just bog standard on S60, an s60 is 10 years old

Hopefully with this partnership and the upcoming cortex a5 (cortex a8 on a budget) then we will see 99 quid windows phone 7 devices by the end of the year

From what I read, the task manager app is so you can close apps that you aren't using anymore in order to save memory/battery/cpu.

Task switching is going to be by holding the back button, with a Windows7 style preview of each apps current status.

We have lots of devices for development at work including a HTC WP7 phone, after 5mins I wanted to claw my eyes out... 10mins it was either it or me.

a file manager, i had to download one for android

Alarm clock, again had to download one

ability to use external gps - had to download an app

video player - had to download an app

In addition the actual dialer, contacts and sms abilities aren't as well integrated on my android than they are on S60 v3

The OS itself is so much quicker though and more intuitive

edit: currency converter is another thing i had to get an app for too. :-(

Thats a flawed logic though, you can argue that Symbian is bloated with a load of rubbish you dont need. With Android and the iPhone, and W7 you can just add the things you need.

I mean, its not like the 10 seconds it takes to install an app is a large hindrance of your ability to use the phone is it?

I like android, just comparing. I don't want a whole bunch of unregulated apps on my phone, and the fact that you can't sort apps in the app drawer on android is a pain. On Symbian they were neatly tucked away in tools, or accessories or media etc..

Anyway that's a different argument.

I haven't had a chance to play with WP7 but from what i see on youtube i like the look of it and think it might actually work out as a short term move for nokia.

You can get an app for that.

I disagree. The vast majority of people don't give a doodah about if it's Apple/Microsoft/Google. It's only once you get onto forums like this where people want to spend more time fiddling with a phone than actually using it to make calls/email/text etc that you get the blind brand loyalty.

Android has done incredably well in a short time scale, not least because Google have bought market share by in effect giving it to manufacturers for free so unsurprisingly allowed for cometative pricing. The only credable opposition in the smartphone market has been the closed, expensive Apple option which, with all the will in the world is one, expensive (albeit it superbly put together and game changing) handset on a few select carriers. I know plenty of "average" users that have Android phones, not because they can roll their own ROM, or even know where the gabillion tweaks are even if they wanted to use them, but because it was cheaper than iPhone and provided most of the same features. Outside of the geeks it's often a compromise device for people that would have had an iPhone but don't want to spend £500 on a mobile phone.

The danger Android has is it's heading the same way Windows Mobile went. Increasing fragmentation of the underlying OS versions and hardware standards is making it increasingly difficult for new quality Apps to be developed. Whilst having 100 million apps makes a great headline, having a choice between 2000 fart apps is less interesting.

WP7 has introduced an alternative to the two incumbants, and despite what some of the people that will hate it becuase it's MS and not Android will say, it's actually an impressive OS that arguably moves things along for the vast majority of users. Given it's in effect V1.0 with 1.1 and 1.5 due over the next few months, coupled with the Nokia deal I think people underestimate just how well it could actually do.

I'm even tempted to compare WP7 (especially with the Nokia deal if it's done right) with the launch of Xbox which had the playstation/sony fans laughing they're heads off at the idea of MS producing a decent gaming system to compete against Sony or Sega.

Interestingly the WP7 market place is at 8000 apps and climbing at a rate that matched Apple and actually exceed Android on release.

Arguably the market has moved on and we're in a different place now, but as far as I'm concerned it's a good start, has promise and can only be good for the market bringing in greater choice.

One thing is clear. With the announcement of the Nokia deal it kills once and for all the rumours and wishfull thinking that WP7 is going to be dropped by MS and they will stop doing mobile devices. Piece together WP7/XBox/Nokia/ARM and system of a chip stuff talked about lately and i'm optimistic there's going to be increasingly interesting "stuff" coming.

Great post and i agree completely, i think a lot of us geeks just don't see it because we have the mantra

More configuring = better

But that's really not the case, the thing that a vast majorty of people want is a fast, responsive phone that does what 95% people do on phones without fuss, complication and delay.

After many years with 'smart' phones, i come to realise they're not as fun owning one as people think, in fact they can be a right headache sometimes. My W7 phones does what i want, FAST, no fuss. job done.

While given the opportunity to fully customize Windows Phone 7, Nokia should bring some of their best stuff from Symbian and Meego onto Windows Phone 7 to make it an even better mobile os platform. This could drive developers into making more apps for windows phone 7 and boost sales, making this platform a threat to Apple and Android.

I'm looking forward to see what both companys could come up with in the long run, plus if it's any better than my Android phone I may consider buying a Nokia phone that runs Windows Phone 7.

Someone at Nokia let slip that there will be a tablet in June 2012, surly this must be windows8 as they aren't going to be using another os. So do you think it's likely we will see windows 8 this early as it was scheduled for autumn. anyone got anymore info on what Nokia actually said as all I can find is a one sentence quote.

Been running w8 developer preview and it's rock solid already.

I'm excited and can't wait.

What build is that Glaucus?

I'm tempted to give it a try.

The developer preview one, that was released at the conference the other month. Build 8102, I've only had one issue so far and thats apple products don't work with it, so no syncing/updating.
Other than that everything else I've tried has worked fine.
