:/

You really can be a tard some times.

I wanted to go to uni, my family doesn't earn enough to pay my way through it, I don't/didn't earn enough to pay my way through it. The Govt gives me a helping hand, along with a whacking great loan, I can afford to go, and don't have to pay back a ridiculous amount of money.

When I finish uni, I'll get a job, I'll pay back my loan and pay my taxes, this means others who can't afford to go to uni can then afford to go, just the same as me.

If you actually stop and think about it, I will pay my way through uni myself, just after I've finished in the form of taxes and loan repayments.

EDIT: In fact, before I went to uni I was paying taxes whilst I worked, so I was paying for others/myself to get the grants. I am also currently on my placement year, paying taxes etc. so again, paying for it all.

Same as Invader, I actually worked for a few months before going - started in January. And I paid a hell of a chunk each month on taxes so I dont really think you're in a position to judge people on what they claim - and what theyre entitled too.

IMO the only thing I don't like my tax money going to is dole chavs but unfortunately I have no control who can have it

Well to be honest, and to be very fair, if you want something go out and earn it, i earn enough money to fund my car by working 2 jobs up to 60 hours a week, ones an apprenticeship..

Its just stupid, why not get a grant to pay back, i dont mind that at all, but non repayable, its stupid. And to everyone who saids they are entitled to it, why are you entitled to it? Because you choose to go there?

So infact, anyone who dosnt want to work can just get a grant to go to uni instead.. Sweet, and we all know how university life is stereotyped. People who want to go to uni should work, tax freem so that they can save enough to go.

By all means i want people to do the best with there lives, but not at MY expense, i want my own life too but the govt make it very hard with the very high tax brand im in just because i NEED 2 jobs to have the life i want.

Get a grant to pay back and maybe unis should drop there prices a little.

Perhaps because they can become high tech engineers, obtain high finical qualifications and as such do wonders for the economy. it's much better to have an over qualified work force, than under qualified.

Just because your family is poor doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to obtain these kinds of jobs.

And before some one talks about all the rubbish degrees and degrees that have no job prospects, that's a different debate.

should have gone to Uni then

(lol that was low, I'll go and hide lol)

yup, the tax-payer.
Im going to uni this year, and although i get the standard fees, I wont get any other help from the governement at all, and my dad works his butt off playing so much in tax, and i never get anything back for it.

It annoys me sooo much.
Yes my dad earns lots, but hes not paying for me to go to uni, he's left it up to me!
He says its my responsibility to fund it.
So even though he earns more, im not getting it..
And yet becuase of his income, i get nothing.
gahh so im in exactly the same position as someone who does get the grants, but STILL not entitled to them :(

*sigh*
So im worse off for it.

I've gotta disagree and agree with you.

I think that University should be partially funded by the Government, as it is now. However, why should the people who are in power now get free education yet we pay £3,000 a year?

The way the grant system works is a complete joke too. Anyone who's parents earn just over the threshold get screwed at the moment because they can't afford to give you money and the Government won't give you any either, whereas the rich get money from parents and the poor get money from the Government. They have upped the border to £50,000 but that really doesn't help people who have already started Uni.

Even worse is when your dad has been made redundant and the money gets even tighter. The government use the previous years wage so while my parents are under going a cash flow problem while they wait for the redundancy to come through I'm stuck scrambling for the bank to increase my overdraft.

It should not be income assessed. purexxevil, welcome to my world.

It just annoys me a little, this isnt the only issue, benefit thieves annoys me too, but thats a different subject, i aint against people going to uni, NOT at all, infact, i praise my friends for going and i try encourage my sister to stay on at school so she can, and one day i even want to, but to give out non refundable grants is just beyond belief.

I actually worked whilst at college...I've had a job since 16 all the way to 19 when I went to uni, so have paid a whole heap of tax, and worked whilst at uni, and again I'm in full time employment. :)

should have gone to Uni then

This is actually what I was thinking. You having to work two jobs is entirely your choice, you could have gone to uni, got a qualification, got a decent job and only had to work the one job.

Does your apprenticeship cost 10,000 pounds?

First year is around 1k, next 2 years are around 2k, uni will obv cost a fortune, but the whole thing is funded through company.

And in a way, im paying a lot of it myself as i dont even pay minimum wage yet.

Well because I started in January, I have some catching up to do, but yes whenever I have holidays and term breaks, my recruitment agency that I use, finds me temporary work for summer breaks.

I can see where you're coming from James, but its not free to go to Uni, and whilst the fees can be taken care of with the StudentLoanCompany, you still need to eat, sleep, etc.. which is why there is a loan to cover non-academic expenses.

but to give out non refundable grants is just beyond belief.

So you'd rather the Govt. gave people larger loans and then made them more in debt when they finished uni so they have next to no net income when they get a job and have a loan stuck on them for the rest of their life? You think things like that help the economy?

You really are such a nice person, I wish I could be as nice and cool as you...

And in a way, im paying a lot of it myself as i dont even pay minimum wage yet.

That's basically what I've been saying about people who get the grants, we get the money now but still effectively pay for it.

got a decent job and only had to work the one job.

Im an apprentice engineer on 200 a week

2 wage rises a year, a huge wage rise once i qualify, the chance of going to uni if i want to and im in a growing trade, i cant ask for much more to be fair, im happy with it, i just want more money to keep me going until i qualify.

I work over the road at the coop on evening as its convienient, ill be wasting less time and earning more and i dontr go out as much as i used to to save more!!
