Non-repayable grants

Im an apprentice engineer on 200 a week

2 wage rises a year, a huge wage rise once i qualify, the chance of going to uni if i want to and im in a growing trade, i cant ask for much more to be fair, im happy with it, i just want more money to keep me going until i qualify.

I work over the road at the coop on evening as its convienient, ill be wasting less time and earning more and i dontr go out as much as i used to to save more!!

Well to be fair Im sure your iPhone subscription probably takes a sizeable amount out each month ;)

So you'd rather the Govt. gave people larger loans and then made them more in debt when they finished uni so they have next to no net income when they get a job and have a loan stuck on them for the rest of their life? You think things like that help the economy?

You really are such a nice person, I wish I could be as nice and cool as you...

That's basically what I've been saying about people who get the grants, we get the money now but still effectively pay for it.

So you can justify the govt throwing money at people to go to uni and never have to pay it back? People wonder why our system is such a mess, its with these kind of things, we are giving the money away.. Either way most people will get a job and pay taxes, uni or no uni.

We are just loosing millions every year giving them free money. Even making them pay back half would be suffice, just giving them a WHOLE lump some will drain us even more.

And id like to think i am a nice person to be honest, i cant even be bothered to describe why i think this.

Im not a bad person, i just cant justify giving whole grants away, especially when the country is in such a state.

It does but instead of going out twice a weekend, i cut it down.. You see, i get what i want, because i work for it. I aint saying people shouldnt go to uni, im not saying they shouldnt get a grant, by all means help them as much as poss, just dont give the money away so easilly, make it repayable, not totally non repayable.

My parents earn just over the limit for grants so I get nothing from the government.

I think it's quite a strange concept really, working a part time job is enough to be able to enjoy your uni life and the loans are enough to pay for rent. The majority of people I know who get grants use it as an excuse not to work which ***** me off sometimes.

What's even worse is people with parents who are stinking rich, pay all of their fees and rent etc, give them money to live off and because these parents are retired their sons/daughters will apply for the grant too :s

There should be a more thorough check/criteria for getting the grant aside from a single wage amount so that only deserving people get it.

Maybe instead of income assesed grants, they should be given out depending on the course you're doing, media studies and the likes just don't need to be taught in higher education.

Thats actually possible?

How strangely selfish :o

Oh okay then lol, shall i work my 64 hour week as hard as i normally do so people can get a free education and live up a life of going out and getting drunk, turning up late to lectures and probably not even enetering a job anything to do with what they have studied??

Okay yeah im sorry im wrong, go ahead people, gratefully accept my hardearned :) Most people at uni wont even care about who pays there loan, theyll think the govt has to fund it.

someone surely must see my side to this, it seems everyone is against me?

How old are you?

Whole lump sum? What? How big do you think these grants are?

The loans are far larger and are paid back at a minimal rate unless you earn a large amount.

And yes I think it is worth while, it enables the country to have more highly trained and skilled people in their roles, rather than loads of badly trained people...what AcidHell2 said basically.

What I don't think is worth it though is unis creating degrees in all sorts of pointless subjects that don't help anyone get a job. Those I think people should pay for themselves, if you want to get a dossing degree for the sake of having a degree, pay it all yourself, those of us that want to get a degree to further our knowledge and increase our employability should be the only ones that get financial help (if they need it).

To put it all into perspective, last year I got a total of £9k including loans and grants, this included my £3k fees (part of the loan). So I had £6k to live on for the year, which I did. If I'd only had the loan I'd have been given about £4k to live on for 12 months. Now that's £76pw...which is doable...but then you have to factor in things such as textbooks, notebooks, pens etc. and considering a single textbook on my course costs about £80 and in the first year I had to buy about 3 this leaves me with little money.

There is then the opportunity to get a job whilst at uni, which is great and helps pay for things, but then you will receive less loan and less grant if you do this, especially if you earn a lot of money from your job. So you lose out again...great.

Yea, because everyone uses grant money to go out and get smashed.

What I usually find with people like this, their perception changes to fit their situation perfectly.

More people like you would make the world a better place indefinitely.

And yes. :)

Maybe you should stop working the 60+ hour week, you sound like a miserable old man. Most people who go to uni, pass their course and get a job will pay way more in taxes than you and way more than the few thousand pounds they got. InvaderGIR has got hit the nail on the head.

For people starting in the coming year (possibly last year). I started in 2006, the first year they introduced £3,000 a year fees. Awesome

Aren't courses free next year?
My head lecturer mentioned it the other day, that out courses cost £8,000 a year, but next year the government is paying the lot?

So you have paid very little into the pot really. What you're saying is that everyone should pay for their healthcare, even those who can't afford it due to disability. Everyone should pay for their education, causing masses of people to become uneducated and unemployable and increasing crime. It's better for the country on a whole to have more educated people.
