Non-repayable grants

Maybe instead of income assesed grants, they should be given out depending on the course you're doing, media studies and the likes just don't need to be taught in higher education.

I think this would be the best way to do it. Grants should depend on the degree done. If jobs are needed in one sector then the relevant course get grants. Also there should be a minimum number of hours of lectures a week to qualify for a grant.

What makes the govt think i care about people CHOOSING to go to uni or not??

Maybe you care about your job which wouldn't exist if everyone in the country was a shelf stacker or street sweeper because they couldn't afford to go to university?

It's a sound investment in the countries future enconomy, a few £k now for hundreds of thousands of extra income tax in the future, common sense.

Ema on the otherhand is a waste of money as people are living at their parents house and have no outgoings.

For people starting in the coming year (possibly last year). I started in 2006, the first year they introduced £3,000 a year fees. Awesome

For 2008 entrants onwards, stupid I know. Luckily I get it.

Lol

Most people will never have to pay around 500-600 a month in taxes

You mean like people earning the average wage? Right....

How exactly do grants work by the way? I'm off in September and my dad says that if he gives me any money I won't recieve anything but I say thats false.

The only thing that affects it is how much parents earn a year isn't it?

Your just jealous because you don't think you get any help.

Where do you stop? The government paid everything for you at school - why should you get a free education, whats wrong with digging holes and not being able to read and write?

The simple fact is the economy gains as a whole because of a higher skilled workforce - that includes you.

The government are disgusting for their shameless rape of undergraduates through loans and then fees and you slam them for the meagre allowance they give to the poorest students?

If you want the sort of society where being born to poor parents determines your entire life then fine - I don't, and I hope to god the rest of the country don't either and actually respect the right (yes right) of everybody to an education beyond the three R's.

ps. the Government gives money to most apprenticeship schemes, how very dare you take *my* money

rather than startuing a new thread thought i would ask here 1st....and to stir things up a little bit.
This may be scottish only, but I heard that if you can prove your living off your overdraft regulary then you can receive an extra grant? Anybody know anything about this?

I wish I was eligible for a grant :(

Although having seen that info posted by Strife212, I should be eligible as my Dad is currently unemployed and my Mum is only a secondary school teacher. Hmmm!
