Noob 5850 overclock question

Sorry for the delay been away.

Thanks for all of the responses, much appreciated.

So Ive just tried 1.3v 1000 core 1250 mem.

Loaded Vantage and she crashed on first frame :(

Gonna drop core n mem to 900/1200 n see where i can go from there.

PANIC !!!

Rebooted PC following crash, Windows loaded up , logged in then went to start MSI Afterburner and CRASH!!!

Suggestions?

Just seen your post above after id posted. First thing to do is drop everything to standard. Press the reset button in after burner. Its probably your mem at 1200 that cant take it.

If your mem runs at 1125Mhz as standard I would say try working on your core speed first. I have had my core upto 980Mhz with 1.274v stable but with a mem of 1140mhz. Also install the latest 10.3a catalyst drivers. They give a large bump in framerates.

Ok I will.

Problem remains that I cant load Afterburner to change settings as its crashing every time I launch it.

Would removing the .cfg from Profiles folder remove over clock?

That should do it :)

What make is your card, you state the defaults as 765/1125, thats Toxic defaults, I thought most other versions were 725/1000 ?

Deleted .cfg and rebooted.

I was able to load Afterburner and all of the settings were at default (inc the voltage settings being un-ticked).

Then she crashed again? System was rock solid b4 I started tweaking the card ?

Did you set MSI to load on startup, if yes, then disable it, run CCC/3D Overdrive and click Defaults.... reboot (with MSI still disabled), and test again...

I have noticed that sometimes CCC needs reset to get MSI to work properly.

Card is an MSI , I may have noted the defaults incorrectly and cant boot in to confirm now.

Im thinking of uninstalling Afterburner and the 10.2s I have installed and seeing if the 10.3s and a reinstall of afterburner sorts it.

It was CCC causing the issues as it was still set @ 1000/1250

Both Afterbuner and CCC show the defaults of the card as 765/1125

Big Big Thanks Guys :D

ok, so re create your profile 1, from the defaults, then set up your profile 2 as 800/1125, save it and test it fully for stability and artifacts... then increase the core by 10mhz and repeat..... its a slow process but going straight to 900/1250 with a random voltage is not the way to do things, slow and methodical gets a better safer result.
Once you find the max stable point for the core, start raising the mem in the same way.... once you find its limit... Then start adding voltage to see if you can raise the core further... then the mem, testing each change as you go :)

I found using 3D Vantage was good for testing a core overclock especially the first part called Jane Nash. If the core clock was too high with not enough volts then the water looks like pyramids.

Thanks.

Ive just installed the 10.3s so will report back with my findings (and problems :p )

I used Furmark, firstly the Stability test, ran for 3 - 4 mins at each clock, looking for artifacts etc and monitoring the temps with MSI and a Sidebar gadget :)
Then the Benchmark test for 3000 frames and comparing the min/avg/max to the scores obtained under default speeds, to make sure there was an improvement.

Im using Vantage and RTHDRLTL (or something). Keeping an eye on temps with speedfan and afterburner on 2nd screen.

What should I be considering a max temp?

UPDATE:

1250v

1000c

1125m

STABLE (well 4 runs of Vantage , 5 mins RTHDRLTL and 5 mins ATI tool )

Gonna clock down the voltage now.

Any ideas on temps?

Im getting about 66`c with 1274v 1000/1150 with fan at 50% how much room do i have ?

quite a bit more I would say, not sure how much voltage the card can safely take though (anyone know this). My card sits about 60-70c on load with about 40% fan

I think if I stay below 1300v it should be ok, I hope anyway :P

Running with 1000/1200 now with fan @ 55% , If I can get stable at that I will be very very happy :D

Is that 66 degrees under Furmark?

Whilst running furmark my temps peak at 72 degrees after 30mins+ so 66 is pretty cool IMO, I'm only running 1.1v core too, but only at 850mhz. Under games etc my temps get to around 65 degrees with a max of 40% fan.
