Hey all, so building my first computer. I asked for a spec the other night, then ordered the parts from here.

Just a quick question, does the DVD drive get connected to the PSU or do I wire it straight in to the motherboard?

Shall I leave the plugging in of it until the end?

It will use a SATA power connector. Same as the HDDs. There will be two connectors. A wide one and a smaller one. The wide one is for the connector coming off the PSU. The smaller one is the SATA data cable you connect to the board.
 
your psu has the power cables attatched and the mobo should have a few extra sata connectors. Which mobo did you go for?

as the odd is OEM, it didn't come with a sata probably, but your psu will have the sata power connector, either hardwired or in the box if its a modular psu

I've put it on the mobo ok, but the fan is an absolute bitch to put on, it's got a really, really odd mechanism - I've had to take the heatsink off twice :S Once the Processor came of with it, due to thermal paste.

Any ideas?

AMDs fan mounting system is a royal pain in the ass the first time you try and do it. There's a particular way the brackets have to sit and then you have to tighten them up just enough so you can latch the whole thing up properly. Annoyed me the first time I had to do it.

You'll get it eventually. Just take your time and don't rush it. You'll have to apply some pressure to get it on, but use common sense as to whether or not you're applying to little or to much.
 
i had a similar problem with my 965be, very hard to fit the stock heatsink. I really had to force it, and i worried about breaking the motherboard. In the end, i got it on but i had to pervevere!;)

Also, it's not ideal to remove the heatsink after fitting it if you are not going to reapply some thermal paste as the point of tp is to create a thin seal, it should be alright for now, but i would consider getting some TP and reapplying some when you can.
 
It goes on really hard, it feels as if it should break, but carry on :)

You have to pull one side of the clip up and push the other side down over the small hook on the motherboard. After that you grab the side you were pulling up and jam it down over the hook as hard as you can, then twist the little nob thing and it's on :D

but sometimes it is very hard to remove the heatsink if the tp is baked on. If you ever need to remove it in the future, try it right after you have been using it so that it is still hot and the thermal paste will not be so tough.:)
