Hey guys I've only been drivng 10 months so this might sound like a stupid question, but I hope you can help me and not troll me :P

My car is due for it's MOT and tax at the end of this month and it is about to fall apart so I am getting a new car next weekend (24th) so what I would like to know is do I declare the car off the road(SORN) and that's it? Or is there something else I will need to do except getting in contact with my insurance company when I pick the new car up?

Thanks.

Yes you will need to SORN it and if you're scrapping it then you need to declare that on the Reg document and send your bit off.

Otherwise you will still be liable for any...indiscretions occurring in that vehicle !!

You can call your insurance company now if you know the details of the new car, and get them to save the quote.

Then on the day you need it, call them up and they'll switch the policy over to the new one.

Sometimes there's an admin charge

And of course if you declare your old car SORN make sure it's actually off the public highway.

If you are scrapping the old car drive it to the scrap yard yourself before you SORN it/cancel insurance. Might as well make as much money off it as you can.

If you own a car then you either have to have it with: tax, mot and insurance or
SORN

i.e. if you have a car which has tax, you have to have insurance on it or, under fairly new rules, you will receive a fine.

If you are scrapping the old car drive it to the scrap yard yourself before you SORN it/cancel insurance. Might as well make as much money off it as you can.

Try to avoid cancelling your insurance as it'll cause problems with that vital ncd, instead just change the car on your policy.
