I was coming out of my local supermarket the other day and turned the corner and some overgrown bushes scraped against my car (14 reg Octavia estate) and surprisingly were able to scratch the paintwork permanently. I've not been driving that long so haven't a clue how to repair this sort of thing.

Is there a go to product that people use that's relatively easy for a novice to get right?

How deep is it? Down to the basecoat / metal?

My general suggestion if its not a high value car and you want to fix it yourself is to layer it in using a touch up pen from halfords, then smooth it over with some G3 scratch remover.

It's hard to tell. Here are some pictures:

I've tried waxing one small panel using Simoniz to see if I could get them out, but not had any luck. This is the waxed section:

And this bush is the culprit!

Like I say, never had to get rid of any scratches before so any advice is appreciated.

Wax wont sort it, you need a cutting compound.

That doesnt look like its gone further than the clearcoat, so some G3 scratch remover followed by paint rennovator will level it out and take your eye off it.

Where in Birmingham are you, if you want to pop around I dont mind giving it a quick go for you.

+1 to this.

Thanks Kindai and Bug, I might take (one of you) up on that. I think I might get in touch with the council first though (it's their land) and see if they will pay for a professional repair job.

I hit a pretty solid hedge that had fell about 1ft into the lane near our house, it had been like it a while but its position on a bend ment you couldn't see it until the last second. I forgot one night and met a car coming the other way at the same point as the offending hedge.

Left a few marks on the plastics/paint and a slight dent in the wing of my new Vito.

Like you I was all up for complaining then I realised how stupid I'd sound saying I'd driven into a stationary hedge!

I'm not sure anyone will pay out for you driving into a hedge unfortunately.

I'm doubtful it will go anywhere, but it's an obstruction in the road after a bend, on a dual carriageway. Realistically I had 2 options: hit the hedge or hit the car in the next lane.

Does everyone hit it or was it just you?

I think you have to prove that they're not maintaining the road/hedge suitably and even then they have a certain amount of time to make repairs etc.

Its like claiming for pot hole damage, even if you have a good case you need to put a lot of effort in.

Could get a lorry in that lane without hitting the bush or going into the left lane.

I think you need to learn to look where your driving and get it fixed yourself
