Noob question - Virgin Media - which router for 2.5GB port

A known limitation In the hardware, yup. It's underpowered. Cpu is crud. Not sure virgin uses pppoe either.....
You keep saying that… And that doesn’t make it correct. VM do not use PPPoE, the router would be getting DHCP from the SH in modem mode.

The CPU is weak, but with PPPoE the issue is often made far worse by the software implementation which may only use one CPU thread or have other bottlenecks in its design. Hence firmware upgrades can and have improved PPPoE performance on many Ubiquiti devices (and other routers) but if you're not with an ISP using PPPoE such as VM then that's irrelevant hence @WJA96 having some working fine with 1Gbps services.

You may still run into limits if you run lots of other router features that add significant CPU load but its not a blanket "doesn't do 1Gbps" (and I am not a fan of UniFi routers which I abandoned a while back)

Have you tried it with the latest firmware?

Yes, I dug it out last night to make sure its still pants. :p Updated to latest firmware, the only app running is the network one, tried a couple of speed tests via the inbuilt test. 100% cpu usage, maxed out around 750 down. ie the same issue everyone has. Now the inbuilt test may be crap but speedtests outside of this are also the same.

Its really frustrating as the whole package is great.

Was there hardware changes between pre-release and released UDR's? Just odd that some folk are fairing better than others on same firmware.

not that I am aware of but that doesnt mean much. There are plenty of people with the issue. Its a dual core cpu, its simply underpowered/skimping.

Just odd that some people seem to get the throughput, so it's either setup, firmware or hardware differences.

Either way, i have zero skin in the game so i'll leave it there :)

I would be raging if I paid full price. First foray into Ubiquiti and its trash.

Even my 5 year old Linksys router(though running OpenWrt) outperforms this crud. :p

i have hub 5, into hub speed 1127, speed to pc 1120, from the 2.5gb port. wifi to most devices is only limited by the device capacity, no need for any other faffing around.
wifi to bedroom (from hub is some 35m away, ) 945mbps average on the pc there, my mobile phone has 600mbps capability and anywhere in the house is exactly what i get.
