I have just got my new laptop and basically i want to get a lot of my files from my desktop onto it.

The laptop has Vista Ultimae and the desktop has XP MCE on it. At the minute they are both connected via a hub which is connected to the modem/router, the desktop and laptop aren't networked together as i don't know how to do this properly.

I dont really want to use a USB stick to transfer the data as that will take me ages. So is there any way i can transfer the files through the network?

Thanks, Scott

probly the simplest option would to run home networking wizzard on both comps. once thats all set up, share all the folders and watnots u want on your PC (XP) and then on your laptop, the quickest way would be to go, start, run, '\\computer name' and then find the folders u shared, and then copy copy.

that should be it.

I have ran the home network wizard on the xp machine but how do i do this in vista? I cant seem to find an option for it, im new to vista by the way :)

iam not 100% sure with vista, but is it not in network and sharing? click view computers and devices, and then click the option that says about sharing? make sure u have chosen your on a private network. and in sharing and discory section, make sure:
network discovery is on, filesharing is on, password sharing is off

have ago at that. sorry if iam not explaing too well, but u get the gist?

Yeah i have enabled all of that and now my laptop finds the deskop thanks, all files being copyed across at around 8mbps. Much quicker than a USB stick :)

no problem :) - nice and simple these days, back in windows 95, got a lot more complicated with restarts and watnots.
