Both my monitor and computer are about 3 years old now and I want/need a new monitor. Probably no more than £200, maybe even a bit less, but I have a few questions.

1920x1200 or 1920x1080?

I don't game on PC apart from WoW and even then not hardcore. Will I get black bands all the time on either of those resolutions, all the time or some time?

What about TN monitors? I don't know anything about them, whats the difference and should I be getting one?

Also as my PC is about 3 years old, it runs pretty slow, will I need to upgrade any parts to help run a bigger monitor? I'm going to reformat when I get the new monitor.

Thanks.

Dell st2410 for 155 aint too bad deal "google" its what im gettin on monday. The sammy tho if you can stretch to it would be better for 1920x1200 and good swivel/tilt/height adjustments.

What comp spec do you have btw?

AMD Athlon 64 3200 2.0ghz
Nvidia 7600GT
1gb DDR

Will I get a squished image with 1080 instead of 1200?

I noticed it's TN aswell, the dell one, are TN's as bad as some people say they are?

With TN i hear its not too bad these days mate has a TN screen and is happy enough and im getting the dell which is TN which im hoping i will like ok.

Your specs are a bit lowish imo for HD gaming, it might be ok but you probs need settings on medium or somit. This is just opinion mind you since i have no experience really with tfts, but just judging from specs on paper alone id say it would be best to get a 19" tft maybe 20 or 22 i duno tho wouldnt think 24 would be good with your current spec.

Shouldnt be squished just wont have the extra space.

The size of the moniter doesn't actually matter, it's the resolution which effects performance. In terms of what you do with your pc, it sounds like you'll be able to cope with your CPU and GPU for a while yet. However along with the new moniter I would highly suggest upgrading to at least 2GB of RAM, as that'll allow you to have more memory space to run things.

Back to the resolutions though, your pc should still run fine at whatever resolution you put it to, so I wouldn't worry about that. But when you go into a game I'd recommend putting the resolution on your moniters native resolution then play around with the graphics settings and lower resolutions till you get it looking good while still getting over 30fps.
A 22" inch moniter will probably suit your needs :) though all the better if you can afford a 24"! if you don't like the black bars when watching things, then get a 1900x1080 resolution moniter.
