Hi folks,
I'm new to VR. I just got my first headset. Quest 2.
I have a lot to learn. Using a link lead which Oculus app test scores around 1.6gbs.

I've only really tried two games so far. Project Cars 2 and Assetto Corsa. The graphics quality I get is, to my eyes, quite disappointing.
Straight out of the box, the gameplay runs smooth enough for me but the images seem quite blurry in my view. Pixelated and shimmering.
I'm not expecting HD quality but I struggle to believe its as good as it should be.

I've tried a couple of alternate graphics settings suggested as "perfect" for Project Cars 2 but failed to see any (if any!) Significant improvement.

Is this image quality fairly typical, of current VR technology at present? Perhaps I was expecting too much.

Is the graphics card listed in your sig accurate? If so, that's probably your issue.

For full quality, you're essentially looking to drive close to 2x 4k screens at 90fps. Your card (if it's still the rx 590) is probably your biggest choke point right now.

Yes it is RX 590 8Gb.
Dang! I'd like to upgrade but buying a new graphics card right now would cost an arm and a leg.

And a torso!

It's a quest 2. Enjoy the standalone features for now. Some really good fun games. Especially now 120hz is going to be supported for some games.

Also, keep checking on teh graphics card forum (and the sub forum you can find in it), as OCUK may do another drop of reasonably priced high end cards. It's how I went from a 1070ti to a 6700xt without having to sell my first born.

Torso:). Iike it. , but I might have to consider selling my body given the current prices.

Perhaps if I sold my rx 590 I could put the funds towards a newer card. Even the rx 590 is getting silly prices on auction sites.

So what would be a reasonable card to buy? I'm not really up to speed with the current graphics card range at present.
Midrange would have to do. But subjectively 1.5 to 2 times better than the rx 590?
Any suggestions? Any bargains anywhere out there?

Like I said, your best bet would be to wait on what offer OCUK have next I suspect. No idea what it'll be, or even if it'll happen, but it'll be a new card at close to msrp with a proper warranty etc. Or, you can watch notifications for Founders Edition cards, since they have a fixed price, and hope that you get in the queue quick enough.

EDIT - You'll still be looking at £400+ (most likely plus plus), but after selling the 590 it'll sting less.

Well, in the current climate I think £400 plus for a card isn't too bad at all. (relatively speaking). I'd be flogging my 590 and topping it up with around £250 to get another card.
I'll keep my eye out for a members deal. I've just taken a quick look over there and it seems they do offer some tempting deals at times.

Thanks.

I wouldn't flog my only decent graphics card until I had the new one in my hands. There's been too many instances recently of people selling semi-decent cards in preparation for getting a better one, then finding either the new cards are effectively unavailable or they're being scalped and are unaffordable.

Agree with that. I waited till the 6700xt was in my machine and running before selling my old card on.

Update:
Your all bang on the buck. My graphics card is a wimp!
I set all my graphics settings to lowest possible in PC2 and AC. The image was actually better than before when I had them on medium(ish) settings.
Very playable. I was pleasantly surprised to find the image was quite acceptable.
But now you got me all jonesing for a new card. :)

Thank you.

Are you using the Link cable or Virtual Desktop? If you are using the Link cable, then it might be worth considering getting Virtual desktop?

You see the Link cable uses H.264 to encode the signal. AMD cards are terrible at H.264 encoding. Whereas, with Virtual desktop, you can use HEVC(H.265) AMD cards perform much better when using this codec. So you should see an improvement in graphic quality and it should allow you to raise the settings a little.

:)
I've cocked it up:) lol.

@danoliver, Fiddled with supersampling in oculus debug (Or was it Tray Tool? or both? Can't remember) Didn't see much difference in image. It was as good as my recent efforts.

Then reset SS to 0 again (I think)

@melmac, Installed Virtual Desktop. Been meaning to give that a try since I got the Quest 2. That looks like a nice reasonably friendly interface. Much simpler and neater than ALVR which I had been experimenting with previously.

Anyhow, ran PC2. Got a terrible picture. Really p**s poor. I must've messed up some setting or other. Half my fun is tweaking and discovering the do's and don'ts with technical toys anyway.

I'll give it a go tomorrow night when I have time to tinker.

Did you get anywhere with this bud?

I've been playing project cars 2 for some months now and notice that visual/performance differs drastically from day to day.

Had it running pretty decent before oculus messed up the USB speeds with one of their previous updates so I had to lower all the performance settings to get it running at a decent rate. They then resolved the USB speeds and I was back at 2/2.3 mps so figured I'd be able to crank the graphics back up but nope, wasn't happening.

I've tried every VR graphical guide out there and I'm just not having any luck, do find that I can ramp the steam supersampling up a little more than I can the oculus one when running with SteamVR.

Did you test out Airlink? To get it working you might have changed the encode bitrate in the Oculus debug tool back to 0. Which makes the image quality through the link cable worse. Try setting it back to 200.

Also check the Render Resolution in the Oculus App. Since the V28 update the settings might have changed. Mine did. So you might be running at a lower render resolution than you were before the Update.

Ayyyye, my only way to get airlink working with my set up would have been to get WiFi 6 adapter and then I wouldn't be able to play online and most of my pcvr stuff is with the lads on a weekend!

Before the update I was running 80hz at around 1.1x - 1.3x resolution but even with V8 28 I'm struggling with 72hz with anything outside of the recommended resolution.

...Might just have to cash out my Dogecoin and get a 3080 prebuilt system

 Have been tempted to buy a prebuilt system myself just to get a 3080 card. But, so far, I have resisted. It's not just not worth the money!!

Might try and get a 3080Ti if there is a chance of getting one under £1000

Hi,

Being a complete noob and a bit thick, I eventually found out that a lot of the blurriness I was referring to is actually called Screen door effect. D'uh! (Old fart =slow learner :). So it seems, to me anyway, that this is just the state of technology at the Quest 2 price point right now. I imagine other, more expensive headsets may have less of this effect.

Sure, my graphics card struggles to give me the graphics quality i'd like but I don't really notice much of the scenery when racing. It is quite acceptable. The cars appear fine. The performance/frame rate is decent enough. No glitches or noticeable frame drops that I can see. Yes I'd like a better card but given the state of the market right now, it doesn't look like I'll be splashing out on a new card soon. (I'm still looking though. Incredible to see there are people on well known auction sites actually paying £650 for a second hand 1080TI. No warranty and unknown history of a card? Not for me, too big a gamble.

As for performance, my RX 590 seems ok. I can even put supersampling up to 2.0 (Although I haven't played it much at 2.0) without any great performance drop.
If that seems odd, given my set up, then I'm probably doing something wrong and my mistakes are cancelling each other out :)

I might add, I got myself a second hand Oculus Go. Using Virtual Desktop I set it up for PCVR. In my opinion, on PCVR I get almost as good an image on the Go as on the Quest 2. Ymmv.

Project cars seems decent on medium settings. Automobilista 2 seems to be way better than PC2 graphics wise on my setup.
