does anyone find the default/normal/medium settings in games hard enough?
I see a lot of posts on here about completing games on the hardest settings, a thread not so long ago about being defeated if you HAD to play on anything less than the most difficult level

does anyone feel they've beaten the game just playing on normal settings?

doubt I'll ever finish a game on veteran/world class etc

On Call of Duty, i'm usually on 'Hardened' as I can be bothered with trying :p But Starcraft 2, I struggle to go higher than Normal :)

Depends on why I'm playing the game, one with a good story but rubbish elsewhere will get played on the lowest level. I can't abide end of level bosses for instance, a game should progress smoothly.

Andi.

If there is a choice of easy medium hard I will go for medium. If there are four or five difficulties I will bump it up one.

Some games are just really dull on normal difficulty, Dragon Age for example (if you have any idea what you're doing, however, first run normal is still a challenge).

CoD will probably get mentioned a lot but I just get really bored of playing above regular, I know I could do it but it just takes ages and gets really frustrating.

Depends on the game tbh. I'll always start on medium/normal but if the first few levels are easy then I'll start it again on hard. An example would be Medal of Honor which was ridiculous easy even on hard!

Totally depends on the game. Shooters I'll play on medium or even easy. I'm currently playing Forza 3, and while I'll do most races with hard ai, I usually make sure my car is a bit beefed up so I still have an advantage.

Depends on the game. Shooters i'll do hardened. Games like uncharted, assassins creed and rpgs I start on normal difficulty. If I think thise games don't offer a challenge on normal then i'll up it.

I mostly play on normal, some games 'normal' mode however is far to easy, i have completed a good few games on hard. Fair play to those who can complete them on hardcore or nighmare, I just dont have the patience for it lol

I usually play on Normal. I don't seem to get much time to game any more so i don't want to get crazy frustrated in the few hours i get. What i tend to do is play through again on a harder setting later if i really liked the game.

SC2 on Pc for example had my campaign on Normal but as i was going through i also went back and played some levels again on Hard. Uncharted i completed on Normal and when I get time I'll try again on a harder setting as i loved the game. Probably the same with batman AA.

I used to play every game on normal until several years ago, but these days I fancy the challenge so will start on hard. Rarely a game will get the better of me to the extent that I have to lower it back down.

Some games are better on the harder difficulties because the level of realism is increased or the AI is superior.

for me which difficulty i chose usually depends on how much time i have to play a game. for instance mass effect games i wanted to have finished before going back to work so i played on normal difficulty which meant i didn't have to do all the side missions to get a few extra levels and be able to beat the bad guys. if i have plenty of time i play on hard and then learn to properly play the game and do anything extra to make it easier later.

i often find that if you start the game on hard it's easier to play then playing normal then going to hard half way through as your methods wont work, e.g. taking out a bunch of bad guys on normal just run in and kill, on hard you have to take one out at a time then run and hide etc.

good point....i completed batman on ps3 but got it on steam for cheap recently, tried to play it again on hard and was killed within the first few minutes

I always start on the hardest but that's in part thanks to achievements. If they stack then it saves playing through multiple times which is never as fun after the first time.

Probably bites me in the backside though if I get bored of a game and come back to it months later it's rather difficult to learn the game again when you're near the end on the hardest difficulty :)

Normal the 1st time through, for the story and to get used to the game controls.

Hardest difficulty setting to clean up missed Trophies.

As already said by afew, totally depends on the game.
Gears of War 2 for example I raced through first time on Normal, then on Hardcore and Insane.
