^ I'd agree with the above.
Games generally aren't as tough as they were back in the day... playing some platformers on hard with no saves and if you died you went back to the start of the level, that kind of thing was tough.
The trouble is also that it's hard to know what level difficulty to go with now. It used to be just 'Easy', 'Normal' and 'Hard'. You knew 'Normal' was the best choice as 'Easy' would be too easy and 'Hard' would be hellish.
If we look at some of the current popular titles:

Recruit
Regular
Hardened
Veteran
Gears of War
Casual
Normal
Hardcore
Insane
Halo
Easy
Normal
Heroic
Legendary
They all seem to be going with four difficulty levels.
I personally always play on one below the hardest level, as normal is usually too easy, then go back and maybe play that hardest setting on another play through.
I think really they just need to re-balance things back to three levels. Make Easy....easy and Normal a bit more challenging, then you've always got the hardest difficulty afterwards for a real challenge of skill
