Those drives seem fine. I think the problem is the DVD drive.
As John says, use a RAR file on the DVD, it'll be much quicker.

Which DVD drive would you recommend as im going to take it back today. Its as loud as a train , always has been and the fact that it cant do what i want it to do , and what it should be able to do is enough reason to get another.

Well.... After 40 mins wait at OCUk i got it swapped for the Sony DRU-870s and it is about a tenth as loud for a start , almost silent. Plus ive just succesfully copied the contents of the disc to the hard drive with no delay, crashing, freezing up.

Looks like it was the dvdrw after all
