Hi all,

i was just thinking today about how different races tend to be sectioned out in different area's of the country,

The reason why i am wondering this is today i had the pleasure of being in Ilford, Essex and found that it's all Asian or black living there, Obviously back in the day this would not have been the case so what has made this area "white" free? When most of the houses that were built in ilford (most look at least Victorian and possibly even older) they would surely have been occupied by white's (in which i mean Europeans) or possibly even a true multi-cultural town.

Did it originate because certain ethnic types were bought to england for work and only given houses in specific area's, then these family's grow and their children buy more houses in the area and so on?

As i said, this is not a Racist Rant i am truly interested in why this happens.

Yup, people who move to Britain will just move to the same area where family live or people of the same culture/nationality.

I can understand this i suppose, I would do exactly the same, Although i wonder how it all actually started.

So what you are saying is that they find the "nice" area's of England to live as do the British when moving to other country i.e marbella in spain?

No not really it's because Marbella is more English than Lambeth and people follow people, we aren't that clever a bit like sheep sometimes, ooo Bobs moved there it must be nice.

I'm looking to emigrate to the US and am interested in places other English people have found nice

Look, I'm not racist but *spews the most racist bile that completely contradicts the opener*

(might have a dash of "I have a black friend, so....")

Just over time I guess, one family after another until there's a pretty decent community :).

Not everyone does that though, when my girlfriends parents moved from Kenya to Britain in the early 80's (they're Indian, same thing goes on there too, a lot of Indians moved over during the days of the Empire) and her mum didn't want to live 'where all those other Indians are'.

I went a run with them into Southall for some stuff they were getting for a wedding, the demographic is something like <10% white.

:D :p

Pretty much hit the nail on the head, although I'd imagine it was less that they were given houses in that area and more to do with the fact the houses in that area were more affordable when they moved here.

You'll see the same not only in Ilford and the surrounding area, but also in other East London areas such as Upton Park and East Ham. In addition to this you've also got the fact people from a similar culture tend to gravitate together (due to friends, family, amenities, etc).
