Not all of Sonys formats failed.

successful:
betamax (profession use)
various camcorder formats
3.5" floppy disk as we know it today

crashed:
minidisc
betamax (consumer market)
sacd
umd

they are, afaik, sony owned formats.

You missed out atrac3 in the latter section, gave me no end of trouble and is the reason i refuse to give my money to sony if the choice is available.

I find it amusing that UMD can be defended as a portable gaming medium, i would advise anyone doing so to google WWE smackdown vs raw loading times, there's a video floating around showing that it takes 5 minutes from starting up the machine to entering a quick match, the loading times are totally unsuitable for a gaming medium, never mind the movie aspect.

As has been said by many, the PSP being a successful machine doesn't make UMDs the same, bearing in mind what Sony wanted the PSP to achieve as a movie machine its failed miserably.

A product shouldnt be branded a failure just because it isnt commercially succesful.

Betamax was used in the professional market for nearly two decades by the majoirty of "users" - while this might be a smaller market than was originally intended but the sales where very healthy for 20 years or so - there is no way this can be called a failure.

While the number of players /units would have been gigantic if it had been commercially a success they were selling this amount because it was a decent system and very reliable (a much higher brand quality than VHS) the mere fact it lasted so long is a tesement to its success.

UMD was only devised for the PSP, no-one else was ever going to use it and while the films were too highly priced and therefore deserved to fail (they should have been £8 tops for the new releases and then would have stood a chance) at the initial launch of the umd I would have loved a recorder just to play around with it (remember pen/thumb drives werent anywhere as large then as they are now) - I really hope Sony and developers in general make use of inter-operability between the PSP and the PS3 I think this could be fabulous if done well

The ministick is one recent format that is going ok (not brilliantly though) and used by many manufacturers - the problem I see with it though are that there are too many versions and it should be made more simple.

ok so one game takes 5 minutes - why do you think thats the fault of the player and not bad coding? I have timed a quick RR6 race at working within 60 seconds - I fully admit that this may well be the fastest but it CAN be done if developers want to do the graft to start with.

The PSP is a good idea - but its been surpassed by a few mp3 players and needs a killer app (that rightly suggested above the movies on umd failed to deliver) and maybe the PS3 will be this - wait and see

Actually, I believe betamax was mainly used in professional situations as it provided very good quality recordable digital sound, and had very little to do with the quality or format in itself - in fact, it was the 1st commercially available affordable way to make digital sound recordings! ;)

I agree that was also the case - durability in the field was a factor less identified though (most readily agree that the recordings were far superior to those available on vhs)

This place is getting ridiulous for thread bumping with not so worthy comments!

Fair enough if the person actually asked a question, but they didn't. :/

Memorystick :)

Which also wasn't a success compared to SD cards :p.
Sony have only really succeeded on the production side that we don't see, for home use they seem to make unsuccessful formats, at least those that are primarily Sony such as the Memory Stick, ATRAC, UMD etc... Blu-Ray isn't too bad, but has a long way to go. It might have beaten HD-DVD but standard DVD is still battering it.

Saying Sony are successful because you have to use it on their formats is ridiculous... of course you do!

Indeed, I started reading and thought ElRazur is back!!! (Only to realise the 1 year old bumpage! :( )
