Not all of Sonys formats failed.

Well, 1 year on, the thread revival is slightly topical because Sony is increasing more likely to win the HD war. So yes, let's give them this format victory.

See today's story

Best Buy - the US's largest consumer electronics chain - has announced it is to recommend that its customers choose Sony's Blu-ray format.

Its shops will carry HD DVD but Blu-ray will be displayed more prominently.

And online video rental company Netflix said it would phase out its HD DVD stock and exclusively offer Blu-ray.

Attitudes have changed since the thread was first made - I remember everyone saying that Sony are meeting doom and gloom with the PS3, now it's a completely different picture. Quite a lot of people also thought HD-DVD would be the eventual winner - it was only until very recently that blu-ray dealt a couple of knockout blows regarding studio exclusivity. It's a classic example of waiting a year or so for the new technology to settle, then seeing where its spot is. In this case, PS3 and blu-ray are both looking thoroughly comfortable after an uncertain first year.

I'd be very very interested to know your source for making this kind of comment.

The latest quote I had to tender for priced Blueray production about 2x higher than HD-DVD for movie title mastering. It will drop though.

The cost of mastering is much higher for BD too as the tools are immature vs HD DVD which just uses DVD authoring tools.

Old old question but I didn't see it at the time so I suppose it deserves an answer. And the answer is that I honestly don't recall where I read it, but I did say it's cheaper for mass production. I think it was an article in a magazine tbh. I do recall though that they said the production costs per disc when in full swing would be lower for BD than for HD-DVD. I guess by full swing they meant at similar production numbers to any other mainstream format like DVD etc - I should have explained this more in my original post - soz!

As for Kreeeees comments - meh!

We should revive some more old threads as this was an interesting read - go on let's look for some good old debates to rekindle ;)
